Agree on some words to describe. As a class Agree on some words to describe. This picture was taken in early September at Munich central railway station. Over a single weekend, more than 50 trains carried around 14,000 migrants, many of them refugees from the conflict in Syria. Hundreds of German people waited to welcome the arrivals with cheers, sweets and toys. The man and boy in the photograph are among those who arrived from Salzburg in Austria.

Hundreds of German people waited to welcome the arrivals with cheers, sweets and toys. The man and boy in the photograph are among those who arrived from Salzburg in Austria.

Now lets Look at photograph in more the detail. Who noticed that the person offering the soft toy is wearing protective gloves? The uniformed man in the background has a mask and gloves. How does this look? Discuss why people might be wearing gloves or masks. It is to prevent cross infection, which is important for migrants whose immune systems are likely to be weakened by exhaustion or illness.

Year 7,8 and 9 People across the world have been deeply moved by the photograph of Alan Kurdi, a three year old who was found dead on a beach in Turkey. . Discuss the change in the public mood in the UK following that picture. Why might such an image of an individual be more influential than statistics about vulnerable migrants?

People across the world have been deeply moved by the photograph of Alan Kurdi, a three year old who was found dead on a beach in Turkey. Show image to year 10 and 11 . Discuss the change in the public mood in the UK following that picture. Why might such an image of an individual be more influential than statistics about vulnerable migrants?

Only one mainstream news outlet in the UK printed the picture of Alan lying face down on the beach. Others decided against it. Discuss why.? If you had been on the news desk that day, would you have shown it? Remember that editors see many images of dead bodies in conflict zones every week. What might have made this one unique?

Look back at the first photograph and consider the different representations of reality. This picture is factually accurate, it shows what was happening. Does it give a true general picture of the way migrants are greeted? Will the friendly welcome continue in the days, weeks and months ahead? Take a show of hands. Who is optimistic and who is pessimistic? What do young people base their views on?

Volunteers, police, the emergency services and council employees greeted the new arrivals. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/5-practical-ways-you-can-help-refugees-trying-to-find-safety-in-europe-10482902.html

Here are three ways you could make a difference

Keep making your voice heard

More than 350,000 of you have signed our petition for Britain to take its fair share of Europe's refugees, and it looks like David Cameron has listened. But there is still a huge amount of work to be done before desperate people fleeing war and persecution will really feel there is a safe place for them in the UK. As European leaders continue to disagree over the best way to deal with the growing humanitarian crisis, here is what you can do next to help at home.

Volunteer, donate, collect Will send this info out next week

Make a donation Make a financial donation to a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that is doing related humanitarian work overseas. These could include: 4 million Syrians have fled their country since the war began Discuss some of the charities listed on The Independent website as a form class brain storm ideas how they could raise money

CLASS VOTE AT THE START OF THE LESSON: Should migrants and refugees be allowed into the UK? Have a closed vote link voting to voting in local and general elections ask form captain to count
