Location How might it’s location hinder development?
Landlocked! The single tracked railway through Mozambique is the best trade route – it’s slow and expensive! In 2002 Britain and Canada donated $5.6m (£3.6m) for repairs to the railway, to allow faster transport of emergency aid to the Malawi which was facing a major food shortage. Damage to the track during Mozambique's civil war means trains are forced to slow to 10km (6 miles) an hour on a 77km section of the line, delaying the arrival of vital supplies.
How might levels of HIV hinder development means giving a positive result in blood test How might levels of HIV hinder development
HIV The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) attacks the immune system, and weakens the body's ability to fight infections and disease. The final stage, when the body can no longer fight life-threatening infections, is AIDS. There's currently no cure for HIV but there are treatments that enable most people with the virus to live a long and healthy life
HIV/AIDS 20% of adults infected 10,000s deaths per year – low life expectancy Most deaths in 20-30 year olds (economically most active!) Why is HIV/AIDS a barrier for development? As people become weaker they are unable to work High costs of drugs Death of wage earner pushes families into poverty Orphans often live with economically inactive grandparents.
Trade Look at the diagram on the next slide which shows Malawi’s exports: What type of product does Malawi mostly export? Why does this create problems?
Highly dependent on one product (61%) = vulnerable to price fluctuations Raw materials = not as high value as processed materials
