Welcome to your first Live Session on

What is “Zoom”? Why are we using Zoom for this course? Zoom is a cloud-based HD video-conferencing tool. Zoom allows for the instructor and students to meet in real-time via webcam and audio. Instructors can screen share content during their lecture or invite students on mic and webcam for discussion. Zoom allows for participation via features like raise hand, chat, audio, and in some classes polling questions and breakouts. Why are we using Zoom for this course? Ease of use: Download Zoom, join your meeting, turn on your audio Quality: Zoom allows for HD video, clear Audio, and crisp Screen Share Stability: The bandwidth used by Zoom will be optimized for the best experience based on the participants’ network. It will automatically adjust for 3G, WiFi or Wired environments.

Joining Audio and Video Upon entering your Zoom meeting room, you will see the below dialogue. Click “Join Audio by Computer” to begin your Zoom meeting. Note that your microphone and webcam will automatically activate. You can turn them off by clicking on the icons in the lower left.

What controls do I have as an Attendee? Mute/Unmute your microphone Turn on/off camera Invite other participants View Participant list Share Screen  (if host has given permission) Chat - chat with individuals or all in meeting Record (if host has given permission)

View Participants and Raise Hand By clicking on “Participants” in your Zoom toolbar you will be able to see all the participants in attendance for your meeting. The meeting host will have “(Host)” after their name. If you would like to get the meeting host’s attention or ask a question, you can simply click on “Raise Hand” at the bottom of this Participant window.

Using the chat function Zoom offers both public and private chat options, in the same window. To view the chat, click the “Chat” icon in your Zoom toolbar. The public chat, referred to as the “Everyone” chat, is the default setting. To begin a private chat with your Instructor, TA or Support, simply select that person’s name by clicking the dropdown arrow next to “Everyone.” You can then select the desired recipient’s name. Note that private and public chats populate in the same window, with private chats denoted by the red “(Privately)” tag.

Questions? If you have any further questions about Zoom or need troubleshooting help you can visit the Zoom Help Center
