BOOK THIEF MARKUS ZUSAK

SOME CHARACTERS Main Characters are Liesel Meminger, Hans Huberman, Rosa Huberman, Rudy, Max,death (narrator). Background characters are Hitler, Liesel’s little brother, Liesel's biological mother, Tommy, Mayor, Mayor’s wife

Character Descriptions Liesel is a girl who has lost her brother and has to live with people who she doesn’t know at all. She has a lot of different events happen to her. Rudy is one of Liesel friends and is one of many kids in his family. He is also Liesel partner in crime when they steal apples and potatoes with a group of people. Hans Huberman and Rosa Huberman are giving Liesel a home but they soon become not only foster parents but real parents to Liesel. Max is a Jew who is hiding in Liesel’s basement because Hans said in the past if you ever need anything just to go to him and he will help you and now that time has come.

Settings That take Place in The Story Liesel’s home, Germany during the rise of the Nazi Party, Mayor’s house, The farms where Rudy and Liesel steal

A New Family THIS WAS LIESEL’S FIRST ACT OF THIEVERY. Liesel and her brother are off to go to a new family because their mother cannot afford to take care of them. But while they are on their way Liesel’s brother dies and they get off the train and have a small funeral for him. One of the gravediggers had a hand book and he dropped it and Liesel took it. THIS WAS LIESEL’S FIRST ACT OF THIEVERY. Liesel goes to her foster parents house and does not want to do anything. She is sad, scared, and most of all angry. She is angry with her biological mother because she thinks that her mother gave her away but she didn’t. Soon Liesel meets her foster father and he helps her feel a little better. Liesel hides in the laundry room and does not listen to Rosa only to Hans. Hans and Liesel bond over rolling cigarettes. Liesel is having nightmares and Hans comes and comforts her every night.

A Friend Liesel moves to Germany and lives on Himmel street she starts to play soccer when she starts to play a lot and makes a new friend. His name is Rudy and they become best friends. Rudy soon becomes in love with Liesel and he wants to kiss her but she always said no. When Rudy died Liesel was so upset that she kissed him over and over again. Rudy got kissed by Liesel but he didn’t know it because he was dead and he would have loved to kiss Liesel when he was alive. Liesel was devastated to lose Rudy.

A Jew Hans had made a promise to Max’s mom when he was little if they ever needed anything just ask him. Now Max is all grown up and he needs to hide and Hans is the one who hides him. He told Liesel never to tell anybody or they will all go to jail and Max will go to a concentration camp. Liesel soon be comes Maxes friend. When Max gets sick Liesel is really worried and gives him 13 presents. Liesel really wants Max to live and she reads to him every night even though he is not awake. He finally wakes up and Liesel was outside but Rosa made up something to get Liesel inside without yelling that Max is up.

An Authors page Markus Zuask is an amazing author and he definitely put a lot of effort in to the book. I really enjoyed this book that he wrote. He is from Sydney, Australia and he has wrote 4 other books. He wrote this book because he heard stories in his home in his childhood about what was happening in the outside. He says that the book means everything to him.

Man Vs. Himself Liesel is constantly surrounded by death. She has to deal with her brother dying and she is always around self regret. She is competing with herself the whole story. She just thought that her mother didn’t love her and so it was hard for her. She finally starts to get a little better and is finally accepting the real truth. Then she starts to come to realize that she can be strong and independent. Then all of a sudden Max comes into her live and then after becoming friends she loses him and is sad again. Then she starts to question if this is just the way her life is supposed to be. Then she loses everything in a bomb attack. But she has an amazing live and gets reunited with Max.

Here are some pictures from the movie

Here is a compare and contrast between the movie and the book The book has a lot of events in it and the movie took a lot of those important events out of the movie so to me the movie was a little bit of a let down. Don’t get me wrong the movie was good but the book was better in my opinion. I understand that they had to fit everything into 2 and a half hours but they changed the movie to much and twisted things around a lot. The story line was still the same and the characters looked exactly the way they were described. But the movie took out some events that I thought were very important to the book and to the story. At the end I also thought that the it was kind of cheesy.
