Discuss with your partner… What do you need in a paragraph? What is the first sentence called? Do you feel comfortable with your command of grammar to produce a paragraph of writing?

A Complete Sentence A group of words that has one subject and one verb that makes sense by itself. Examples: Manny grades TABE tests in his office. Marc is a student in Notre Dame Education Center. Halyna likes to watch movies on Netflix.

List or Paragraph? In order to have a good hike at the Great Wall of China I will need some essentials. I need a water bottle for the hike in case I get thirsty. A sweater is useful if I get cold. A compass will help me go in the right direction. Sandwiches will be an easy-to-carry snack. I can use the camera to take pictures of unusual or attractive places.

What’s the topic sentence? New York City has many interesting areas. Chinatown is a neighborhood where you can eat good Chinese food. On Fifth Avenue, you can see many beautiful stores. Greenwich village has interesting clubs and restaurants. Broadway is the center of American theater. Truly New York has something for everyone.
