Faith is…….. Complete this statement… Faith is……

Faith and Adversity Genesis 38-39 What is the relationship between faith and Adversity Being the son of a prophet DOES NOT guarantee you’re going to be spiritual or stay true to your covenants. As we study these chapters keep in mind how we handle the trials in our lives is a reflection of our faith…can deepen our faith….is a chance to put our faith into action….adversity can be a blessing…. If you look over chapter 38 you see that Judah married out of the covenant, did not care for his family as he should have. We also read that he broke the law of chastity repeatedly, it seems he saw no problem with having “one-night-stands” and when his sins were about to be made known he attempted to cover up his sins with further poor choices. Joseph, on the other hand, we will learn, is one of the greatest examples of honesty an absolute integrity. He keeps the commandments of the Lord under any and all circumstances. Genesis 38-39

Our faith is like brushing your teeth - no matter how good you do it today, you still have to do it tomorrow

Joseph was sold to Potiphar Joseph was 17 when he was sold to Potiphar… Imagine the misery, loneliness, and worry in the heart of this 17 year old boy. All of his plans and hopes seem to have vanished upon being taken as a slave to Egypt. No doubt, his faith in God was a saving strength to him. He will be 30 years old when he is made the second in command, directly under the Pharaoh. 39:1-6 What qualities did Potiphar seen in Joseph 1-And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of the Pharaoh, captain of the guard, and Egyptian, bought him of (from) the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither 2- And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian vs 2 Moses (the writer of Genesis) immediately assures us that Joseph is blessed by the Lord in all that he does, and Potiphar observing this, soon puts Joseph in charge of everything in his household. Joseph’s integrity and righteousness is already paying of, even under normally abject circumstances. 3- And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand 4- And Joseph found grace (favor) in his sight, and he served him: and he made him him overseer over his house, and all that he had hep into his hand 5- And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field 6- And he (Potiphar) left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not ought he had (he did not have the slightest idea or worry as to what was going on in his business affairs and his household matters because he trusted Joseph completely) Watch the movie clip Genesis 39:1-6

Genesis 39:7-14, 20 Read the story – Gen 39:7-14, 20. SM in V9 what does it mean? 7- And it came to pass after these things (after Joseph had been promoted to overseer over all Potiphar’s concerns) that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph (looked with lust upon Joseph) and she said Lie with me (commit adultery with me) 8- But he refused, and said unto his masters wife, Behold, my master wotteth not (does not know) what is with me in the house, and he hath committed al that he hath to my hand (he trusts me completely) 9- there is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how than can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? 10- And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her or to be with her. She did not give up at this point, but she continued day after day in there attempts to persuade Joseph to give into her lustful desires. Joseph continued to refuse her advances 11- And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph when into the house to do his business (to take care of running his masters affairs) and there was none of the men of the house there within. Potiphar’s wife watched and waited for an opportunity when Joseph was in the house alone…. for yet one more attempt for Joseph 12- And she caught (grabbed) him by his garment (his cloak) saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in there hand, and fled, and got him out. Pause for a moment…. the last phrase of vs 12… “fled and got him out,” is excellent advice for any of us who find ourselves confronted with temptation. There was no hesitation, no analyzing, no wondering if now was the time for action… He simply fled away from the circumstance. He would deal with the consequences later with a clear conscience

Genesis 39:7-14, 20 BACK TO VS 13 13- And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment (cloak) in her hand, and was fled fourth (and had FLED, run, scampered,…out of the house) 14- That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he (my husband) hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in into me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice (I had to scream to scare him away) She told her husband what happened when he came home 20- And Josep’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound; and he was there in the prison

Joseph, Keeper of Prison and Potiphar’s wife, Joseph, Keeper of Prison Genesis 39 Vs 21-23 moses tells us that the blessings of the Lord continued to go with Joseph, even though it appeared initially that he had suffered a major setback. In time, the chief officer in charge of the prison will turn everything over to Joseph and Joseph will end up running the prison.

Watch https://www.lds.org/youth/video/leave-the-party?lang=eng We learn a great lesson from Joseph. When he was presented with a temptation, he immediately separated himself from even the appearance of evil. All of us have events in our lives which will find us in challenging situations. When we are confronted with that which is evil and degrading- whereto it be the wrong kind of music, a television program, or the internet which places us in the wrong environment - how strengthening it is to remember the story of Joseph: And he FLED, and got him out. He removed himself from the temptation. https://www.lds.org/youth/video/leave-the-party?lang=eng

Joseph had faith, integrity, honesty, commandment keeping president Ezra Taft Benson “When Joseph was forced to choose , he was more anxious to please God than to please his employers wife. When we are required to choose, are we more anxious to please For than our boss, our teacher, our neighbor, our date

Dallin H Oaks “Don’t accommodate any degree of temptation. Prevent sin and avoid having to deal with its inevitable destruction. So, turn it off! Look away, Avoid it al all costs. Direct your thoughts in wholesome paths. Remember your covenants and be faithful in temple attendance
