Pure Religion

Civil discourse is no more.

Poor Communicative Skills

This lesson will observe : 1. Our words prove our religion is real. 2. Words are more powerful than a sword. 3. God requires that we control our words. 4. We are judged by our words.

James 1: 26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless.

I. Our words define the validity of our religion or the lack thereof.

Religion : - outward acts of piety - acts of worship

Luke 20: 46 – Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, Matthew 6: 2 – So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

The only religion that pleases God flows from the heart of a person.

Isaiah 29: 13 Then the Lord said, "Because this people draw near with their words and honor Me with their lip service, but they remove their hearts far from Me, and their reverence for Me consists of tradition learned by rote, Matthew 15: 8 This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far away from me.

Colossians 3: 16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Ephesians 5: 19 Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;

Luke 6: 45 The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart. Proverbs 4: 23-24 Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life. 24 Put away from you a deceitful mouth and put devious speech far from you.

heart is not worshipful Thus, speaking evil is proof that a person’s heart is not worshipful

II. Words are more powerful than a sword.

Sticks and stones hurt but words destroy.

Proverbs18: 21 Life and death are in the hand of the tongue.

Proverbs 12: 25 Anxiety in a man's heart weighs it down, but a good word makes it glad. Proverbs 15: 1-2 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. 2 The tongue of the wise makes knowledge acceptable, but the mouth of fools spouts folly.

Pleasant words are a honeycomb,   Proverbs 16: 24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. Proverbs 25: 11-12 – Like apples of gold in settings of silver Is a word spoken in right circumstances. 12 Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold Is a wise reprover to a listening ear.

III. God requires that we control the words that come out of our mouths.

There is never justification for harsh words. No person has the right to knowingly hurt another.

Colossians 3: 7-8 And in them you also once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.

Proverbs 6: 16-19 There are six things which the Lord hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: 17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, feet that run rapidly to evil, 19 A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers

James 3: 2-3 For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well. 3 Now if we put the bits into the horses' mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.

Colossians 4: 5-6 Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity. 6 Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.

Ephesians 4: 29-32 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. 30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

We all need the prayer of David. Psalms 141: 3 Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips. 4 Do not incline my heart to any evil thing,

VI. Our words are part of the standard by which we will be judged.

I Corinthians 4: 5 Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men's hearts; and then each man's praise will come to him from God.

God knows what you will say and what motivates you to say it. Psalms 139: 4 Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O Lord, You know it all.

Matthew 12: 36 But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting in the day of judgment.

II Corinthians 5:20 We are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
