Carl Sagan Sagan was an American scientist specializing in astronomy, cosmology, physics, and biology. He was Jewish and had family members who survived the Holocaust.

Carl Sagan Sagan was known for being a “Science Communicator” which means that his personal mission was to make sure that the general population knew something about important scientific concepts. In 1980, Carl Sagan presented a television documentary called “Cosmos” in which he explained scientific aspects of the universe in a way that the general public could understand.

The Battle of Gettysburg The Battle of Gettysburg was fought in Pennsylvania in 1863, and was considered the turning point of the Civil War. The Civil War was fought between the Union (Northern States) and the Confederacy (seceded Southern States) about sectionalism and state rights vs. federal rights.

The Battle of Gettysburg About 50,000 people (from both sides) died during this one battle. The battle took place over three days. Four months after the battle, President Lincoln made “The Gettysburg Address” which discussed the idea of equality, and maintaining national order.

Vocabulary Words for Sagan’s Speech Blockbuster: The largest “conventional” bomb used during World War Two. They were used by the Royal Air Force (UK) and were capable of destroying entire buildings and city blocks. Civilian Casualty: A citizen (who is not in the military) that dies as a result of war. Atomic Bomb: Came before the Hydrogen Bomb (nuclear bomb). This was the kind of bomb we used in Japan during WWII.

“Thoughts on the 125th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg” Speech given by Carl Sagan about Nuclear War Warns about the danger of these weapons and the amount of weapons that are found around the world Discusses the progression of war and the way people fight in war (from the Civil War to Nuclear War)

Exit Ticket Find an example of ethos, pathos, or logos in the text. Write down the quote and explain why it should be considered ethos, pathos, or logos. Don’t forget to put your name on the post-it when you put it up on the back board!

Bellringer – Period 2 Write down three key ideas that you remember from Sagan’s speech. This will be collected.

Ronald Reagan He was the Governor of California for eight years, and served as President of the United States from 1981-1989. Reagan was known for “Trickle Down Economics,” which means that lowering taxes and increasing investment will stimulate the economy.

Ronald Reagan His most famous quote includes “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall,” asking for the unification of Germany (East and West Berlin). He is said to have “thawed” the Cold War. He is known as “The Great Communicator” because he was a great speech giver. Became the new face of the Republican Party; today he would be considered a moderate conservative.

SDI The Strategic Defense Initiative was a proposed missile defense system that was going to defend the US from foreign Nuclear Weapons. The technology was nicknamed “Star Wars” after the popular movie franchise. “Spies Like Us” – clip shows a fictional version of the technology (uses lasers to destroy the MTV Satellite)

SDI Two kinds of Nuclear Weapons: ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile): Weapons that can travel to other continents (e.g. USA to Russia) IRBM (Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile): Weapons that must be sent from a location closer to the target (e.g. Turkey and Russia)

Reagan’s Address We will be (both) listening and reading to Reagan’s address. While you read/listen, make sure that you are annotating (taking notes) for what you think is important. Try to identify his message and his use of ethos, pathos, and logos.
