What would you do if you had one of the world’s most powerful x-ray sources in your backyard? Prof. Sol M. Gruner, Director Sol M. Gruner, Director

You Do!! CHESS uses synchrotron radiation from CESR, an electron-positron storage ring buried 50 feet under the Cornell campus. The outline of CESR is shown superimposed on its site under Alumni Field. The brick building at 6:00 is Wilson Lab, which houses CHESS.

Layout of CHESS in Wilson Lab

Science at CHESS New beamlines, call the G-line are being assembled by a Cornell faculty group, including Prof. Gruner, for graduate research. The G1 station is of particular interest to the Biophysics Group for x-ray studies of Biomaterials Liquid Crystals Membranes Polymers Liquids

Opportunities for grad students Instrumentation Physics X-ray optics Beam line development X-ray detectors Sample stages and techniques Materials Science Development of new structural techniques Time-resolved studies of dynamic materials Biomaterials X-ray Physics Accelerator Physics Laser Systems

Prototype ERL design by Dr. Ivan Bazarov We are also developing a new kind of synchrotron machine which will provide coherent x-ray beams for experiments which have been impossible to date. Prototype ERL design by Dr. Ivan Bazarov
