Strategies for Reading Fiction

Ask Questions - jot down two types. Basic questions about what is happening in the story. Deeper-level question about characters’ motivations or the author’s overall message.

Draw conclusions - put details together Carefully examine the evidence before drawing a conclusion. Make sure that your conclusions fit the general theme or tone of the story.

Identify with the characters. Imagine yourself in the character’s situation. Think about how you might feel or react in that situation.

Use your senses - sights, sounds, and smells Match the descriptions of sights, sounds, smells, and feelings with similar situations that you have personally experienced. Use your imagination and the details that the author provides to picture the action in your mind. As you read... review the reading strategies and apply them to interact with the text.
