Math in Science Learning Goal: Section 1.3 through 1.5 Learning Goal: Today you will understand skills and tools scientists use to collect data

An approximation of a number based on reasonable assumptions. Estimate An approximation of a number based on reasonable assumptions. Not a guess!

How close a measurement is to the true or accepted value. Accuracy How close a measurement is to the true or accepted value.

How close a group of measurements are to each other. Precision How close a group of measurements are to each other.

Math Tools in Science Mean Median Mode Range

Mean The numerical average of a set of data 1,3,5,7,9 1+3+5+7+9= 25 25/5= 5 Mean= 5

Median The middle number in a set of data data set: 3,1,5,9,7 To find the median: list the numbers from least to greatest 1,3,5,7,9 Median = 5 Median The middle number in a set of data

Mode The Number that appears most often in a set of numbers. Mode = 3 1 9 3 5 7

The difference between the greatest and least value in the set Range The difference between the greatest and least value in the set (Largest number – smallest number)

Reasonable Vs. Anomalous data When looking at your Data, Ask “Does this make sense?” Reasonable Data makes sense. Anomalous Data is data that does not fit with the rest of the Data set.

A line graph in which the data points form a straight line. Linear graph A line graph in which the data points form a straight line.

Data points do not fall along a straight line. Nonlinear graph Data points do not fall along a straight line.

Scientific Inquiry The ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on evidence they gather.

Observational research Where researchers try to observe an event without interfering.

Opinion-based research Involves asking people questions using surveys and interviews.
