Presentation transcript:

Clothes for different environments Use PPt 9 to encourage children to discuss different types of clothes people wear in different countries. The aim of this chapter is to introduce children to insulation, and to investigate insulators, and how they work. Qs for discussion: What is the boy wearing? Why? What is he wearing on his head? What kind of hat is Guzzler wearing? Why is he holding a paper towel? What kind of climate is this?

Insulation in everyday life Clothes from around the world Match the clothes to their countries. Questions for discussion: What kind of clothes are the different people wearing? Why do you think they wear these types of clothes? Why do people dress in so many different ways around the world? Why might people wear light coloured clothes in hot and sunny climates? Clothes are related to climate Class discussion on clothes that keep us cool and clothes that keep us warm Which fabrics keep us warm? How? Which fabrics keep us cool? Which colours keep us warm/cool? Why? (dark colours absorb more light - converted to heat energy light colours reflect light - therefore more cool)

Countries matched to clothes

Clothes that insulate us Is there anything similar about the type of clothes people wear to stay warm or to keep cool? Air is a very good insulator - it keeps hot things hot and cold things cold. Questions: How does the wet suit keep the surfers warm? (The suit is designed in such a way that a thin layer of air is trapped between the suit and the skin. This stops the body heat from escaping.

Q How does the snow suit keep this lady warm? The suit is padded, keeping trapped air inside the material. This air acts as insulation in that it stops the body heat passing through it and keeps the heat in.

What is the name of this Arab dress? (Dishdasha) How does it work to keep the boy cool? 1. The light colour reflects the light 2. The length of the dress keeps air from escaping as freely as it would if the dress was short. Therefore air is partially trapped underneath, acting as an insulator. 3 The looseness of the dress also traps more air underneath and keeps air moving around the body.

How does the jacket keep this man warm and dry? The jacket is padded, keeping trapped air inside the material. This air acts as insulation in that it stops the body heat passing through it and keeps the heat in. The jacket is also (probably) waterproof

Which t-shirt will keep us coolest during a hot sunny day ? Why? Class discussion. All from same fabric but darker colours warmer, white - cooler.

Which hat will keep us coolest on a sunny day ? Why? Class discussion.

Which coat will keep us warmest on a cold day? Why? Class discussion.
