Welcome to HOSA! 2017-2018

What is HOSA?

Membership Benefits Exposure to the health professions Refined health-related skills in and out of competition Access to lots of HOSA-only scholarships! Access to internships and partnerships with the MRC and Surgeon General Network of over 3 million alumni Community Service opportunities Friends that will last a lifetime The opportunity to travel for your competitions! Refined leadership skills through competition and through serving as officers Applying to colleges as members of a huge and well-respected student-led organization supported by the Department of Education Honor Cords for seniors through NTHS

What We Do Compete! Career-Related Activities Community Service Our main focus in the chapter Allows students to learn about a career area in great detail Exposure to medical fields Competitions in many places (Disney, LA, Nashville, Dallas) Career-Related Activities Previous years: MDFR visit, interactive crime scene, Dr. Miami lunch Skype This year: hopefully many more! Community Service In conjunction with TERRA’s ICC: toy drive, thanksgiving food drive Us only: IRONMAN 70.3 Miami, various drives this year

General Club Information Meetings are typically every 3rd Tuesday of the month. You are only allowed 2 unexcused absences If you cannot make it to a meeting please email us in advance with your reason and your absence will be excused terrahosa1@gmail.com You must maintain a 3.0 unweighted GPA to be a member of TERRA HOSA and NTHS Seniors: HOSA scholarships/alumni info are on the TERRA HOSA website

National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) All TERRA HOSA seniors will get honor cords through NTHS This Honor Society is an umbrella society under which HOSA falls You must maintain a 3.0 GPA to get cords You may not abstain from any competition without excuse You may not have more than two unexcused absences from meetings You may not be on academic, attendance, or disciplinary probation You must be committed to HOSA!

Club Fees Club Dues Total: $40 State: $12 National: $10 Regional: $8 State: $12 National: $10 TERRA HOSA: $10 (the club only gets $10 per member) Spent on cords and competition & travel fees Sponsorship letter is on the TERRA HOSA Website. Let us know if you have any fundraising ideas! Collection Date: October 16-25 Will be done online this year

Choosing your Competition You can find a list of all the competitive events and their guidelines here: http://www.hosa.org/guidelines You can also access them from the chapter’s website! START RESEARCHING COMPETITIONS! You’ll need to know which competitions interest you for your application, so start looking ASAP. There’s a file on the club website that contains personality quizzes and other tools to help you discover your ideal competition! There is a competition for practically everything, so look around and see which one suits you best. Some competitions are teamwork events.

Undecided? Confused? There are many general competitions! Job Seeking Skills Prepared Speaking Researched Persuasive Speaking and Writing Community Awareness HOSA Bowl Medical Math! Medical Spelling, Reading, Terminology Many, many more (over 50)!

Interested in a Specialty We Didn’t Discuss? Check our website for some quizzes and other helpful tools to find your ideal competition! Many other specialties like Nutrition and Biotechnology are also available If you still have trouble selecting competitions or want to know more info, talk to us after the meeting, during school, or email us!

Florida Competitions Some competitions are only available in the state of Florida Massage Therapy Family Medicine Everyone is welcome to apply for these competitions! They still offer great learning experiences The only drawback: these events don’t exist at the international level Even if you win first place at the state competition, you won’t be able to advance to the ILC We still encourage anyone interested to apply! Benefit: they’re not too competitive!

This will be on the website forever! You won’t have to get any of this until we tell you (most likely around January)

Applications Club Applications are on the TERRA HOSA website! Online through Google Forms: Application Complete and turn in by Friday, October 13th by 2:20 pm Competition Placement will be posted online by Monday!

The Next Meeting Typically, we will be holding mandatory Monthly Meetings every 3rd Tuesday of the month We might also have additional meetings as well, we’ll try to give you a week’s notice
