Getting Ready for Registration October 13, 2017 The goal of this presentation is to prepare you for the registration process and to inform you of proper procedures and helpful hints.

Before registering… Make a list of requirements for your major, the UCC, and for Honors Develop a schedule for next semester Schedule an advisement appointment Request permits Before you can register for classes, there are a few things that you must take care of. We will go into further detail about each of these points later on in the presentation.

1. Make a list of requirements You need to know the requirements for: Your major The UCC Honors

Major Requirements What courses do you need for your MAJOR? The curriculum control sheet for your major tells you what you need to complete each semester.

Make a note: Which courses recommended for semester one do you need? Which courses recommended for semester two do you need? Is that 15 or more credits? If not, which courses for semester three do you need?

Check to see which courses you need for the UCC Personal Well-Being   2. Expression: a. Arts & Communication b. Writing c. Literature 3. Ways of Knowing a. Philosophical Perspectives b. Historical Perspectives c. i. Social & Behavioral Sciences ii. (two courses) d. Scientific Perspectives e. Quantitative Thinking 4. Diversity & Justice 5. Community & Civic Engagement 6. Global Awareness Writing 1.   Writing 2. Writing 3. Writing 4. Tech 1. Tech. 2 Language 1. Language 2.

How do you know which UCC areas you have completed? Check your degree evaluation!

Open WP Connect In order to access any information, you must log into WP Connect. If you open up the William Paterson University homepage, you will find a link to WP Connect at the top of the page.

Open “Students” Tab After signing in, make sure to select the “Students” tab at the top of the page.

Now you should have a list You should be able to put together a list of courses that includes 15-19 credits of what you need for your major. How to videos http://www.wpunj.edu/degreeworks/how-to-videos/dw_students.html

A minimum of one Honors Course Every honors student must take at least one honors course each semester. Spring 2018 – Honors UCC Courses Courses are available by permit only. Please send an email to honors@wpunj.edu to request a permit. UCC 2A COMM 2630-05 PUBLIC SPEAKING – TR, 9:30-10:45 – Dr. Jen Owlett – CRN # 11648 UCC 2C ENG 1500-11 - Experiences in Literature – TR, 2-3:15 – Dr. Robert Rosen - CRN # 10175 UCC 2C ENG 1500-36 - Experiences in Literature – MW 3:30-4:45 – Dr. Marquita Smith – CRN # 10955 UCC 3A PHIL 1120-02 – Philosophy of the Future – TR 11-12:15 – Dr. Pete Mandik – CRN # 11573 UCC3C ECON 2020-07 – Microeconomic Principles – MW 9:30-10:45 – Staff - CRN # 13143 UCC4 ANTH 202008 - Diversity & Equity in Schools – T 2-4:40 - Dr. Maria Villar - CRN # 11933 UCC 5 PBHL 3180-02 – Tobacco as a Public Health Issue – MW 11-12:15 – Dr. Marianne Sullivan – CRN # 12963 UCC WRITING INTENSIVE FR 3800-01 – Topics in Parisian Culture – Dr. Madhuri Mukherjee – CRN –TBA In conjunction with a trip to Paris, students study a particular period or movement relevant for an understanding of Parisian culture. Note that the course will be taught in English. There are estimated additional travel fees of $1300 due in January. We expect this course to be designated writing intensive (but it currently isn’t in Banner).

So, now you have: A list of courses UCC 2c - ENG 1500 (honors) UCC 3a - PHIL 1120 (honors) UCC 3c - ECON 2020 (honors) UCC 3e - MATH 1170 World languages FR 1100 (at least one of your courses must be honors)

2. Make a schedule The benefit of priority registration is that you can design you own schedule, and that you will most likely get the section of the course that you desire. Honors sections of UCC courses are posted on the Honors Curriculum webpage.

Select Term Date Be sure to select the correct semester.

Select Subject

Click on Course Search

Click on the course you want

Find a section that works

Select a Course To register, you will only need the CRN #. If you need to request a permit, you will also need the course name, number, and section. CRN # Course & Section # Course Title

Work out a schedule and get CRNs

3. Make an advising appointment If Dr. Andrew is your advisor, stop by the Honors Office to make an appointment. If you have a different advisor (music, nursing and art majors) email your advisor for an appointment.

Go to your advisor with 1. a copy of your degree evaluation 2. a copy of the finish in four/8 semester plan for your major 3. a list of classes that you plan to take in the spring Remember that your emails with your advisor should be formal, polite, and businesslike. Do not use the lingo you would use in texting a friend. Use the language and the formalities you would use in a business letter.

4. Request Permits Request permits for Honors, Education, and Upper level courses (verify with your advisor/department) Include the following information in all permit request emails: Name Student I.D. Number Course Title (Calculus II) Course Number and Section (1610-02) Course CRN Number (10300) Some courses require a permit in order for you to register. It is not a “physical” permit, but rather special permission that is granted online. Be as specific as possible when requesting a permit to ensure that you get the class and section that you want.

Email Etiquette Email your advisor for an advising appointment or the department chair for a permit Address your advisor/the department chair by the proper title. Is your advisor a professor? If so, begin your email by writing something like “Dear Dr. Andrew,” or “Dear Professor Andrew.” Remember that your email should be polite, formal and business-like. Don’t use slang language. Write in the style that you would write a business letter.

You are responsible for your degree completion Your advisor can only advise.  You register for your courses.  You make decisions about your best path to graduation.   It’s your responsibility to know what courses you need to complete your degree.

Be a problem-solver Before you send your advisor or professor an email, take a minute to reflect:  can you answer the question you are posing?  Have you looked on the university website or on WPConnect for an answer to your question? Have you googled your question?
