Texas Revolution: Causes

Warm-up: What is CONFLICT? How does conflict begin? What are ways to resolve conflict?

Mexican Constitution of 1824 Established a weak central government and states controlled their own affairs States of Coahuila and Texas were united as one state (Coahuila y Tejas) Texas desired to be their own separate state

Political Division in Mexico Centralists Federalists Strong central government States have very little power Power is in the hands of a few leaders Federal system of government using United States as a model Individual states hold most of the power Texans favored the Federalists and supported Santa Anna

Fredonian Rebellion Haden Edwards leads a failed rebellion against Mexican government Stopped in part by Stephen F. Austin’s militia Unsettling for Mexico – led to Mier y Teran surveying Texas colonies

Mier y Teran Report After surveying Texas, Mier y Teran feared Texas was overwhelmingly “American” His report suggested: Additional troops policing settlements Closer trade ties to Mexico (tariffs on U.S. trade) Eliminating immigration from United States

Law of April 6, 1830 Put power in the hands of a few leaders Mexican forces sent to Texas to enforce laws Stopped immigration from U.S. into Texas Abolished slavery in Texas Tariffs placed on all trade with United States

Turtle Bayou Resolutions Letter written by Texan leaders that stated Texans were not revolting against Mexico, but that they supported Santa Anna’s efforts Santa Anna wanted to restore Mexico to the federal system set up by Constitution of 1824 Texans favored the federal system put in place by Constitution of 1824

Convention of 1833 Met to discuss issues and make requests to Mexican government Requests: Separate statehood Right to use English in business/law Money for schools/defense Resume U.S. immigration Quick Question: If Texas were to become a state, a constitution would be needed. What is a constitution?

Arrest of Stephen F. Austin SFA traveled to Mexico City to discuss reform of Texas with Santa Anna He wrote a letter telling Texan leaders to draft a State Constitution for Texas because he thought Santa Anna would grant separate statehood After declining Texas statehood, Santa Anna found the letter. SFA was arrested and placed in prison for over a year, but never charged with a crime SFA Santa Anna

Texans Declare War After Austin’s arrest, Santa Anna abolished all federalist policies and named himself dictator of a “Centralist” Mexico Upon his release from prison, SFA returned to Texas and explained he had lost all hope for peace. Texas’ only recourse was war.

Summarize Notes: Write a short paragraph about what was learned in your notes yesterday.
