Today’s goals To understand the Library of Congress classification system and how to use the online catalog to find books in the library related to immigrant culture and specific immigrant groups. To learn what an academic databases is and how to use our databases to find information, especially Gale Biography in Context to find important U.S. immigrants. To learn how to find images online for your presentations. To learn how to make copies or print all sources in order to highlight and annotate. To work on the Library Workshop Assignment, and prepare for your portfolio and group presentation by finding at least four library (academic) sources— NO Google sources except for images and blank maps.

Call Numbers What is a call number? The address of the book, found on its spine label. Public libraries and K-12 school libraries use the Dewey Decimal Classification System to organize books by topic into 10 main categories identified by numbers (000s-900s). Academic libraries use the Library of Congress (LOC) Classification System. Also organized by topic. More than 10 categories, and uses letters instead of numbers. More information given on call number. Demonstrate with real book.
