Today’s goals To understand the Library of Congress classification system and how to use the online catalog to find books in the library related to immigrant culture and specific immigrant groups. To learn what an academic databases is and how to use our databases to find information, especially Gale Biography in Context to find important U.S. immigrants. To learn how to find images online for your presentations. To learn how to make copies or print all sources in order to highlight and annotate. To work on the Library Workshop Assignment, and prepare for your portfolio and group presentation by finding at least four library (academic) sources— NO Google sources except for images and blank maps.

What’s the difference? Reference Collection General Collection Examples: encyclopedia, dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, almanac, handbook, index. Gives overview or background info on a topic. Quick access to facts. Not read cover to cover. Can’t be checked out. Non-fiction and fiction books mixed together on the shelves. Organized by topic. Can use index to find pages for specific info. Call Numbers What is a call number? The address of the book, found on its spine label. Public libraries and K-12 school libraries use the Dewey Decimal Classification System to organize books by topic into 10 main categories identified by numbers (000s-900s). Academic libraries use the Library of Congress (LOC) Classification System. Also organized by topic. More than 10 categories, and uses letters instead of numbers. More information given on call number. Demonstrate with real book.

Hallin Call Number: DS559.45 .H35 1986 **Make sure to write the Call Number down to locate a book on the shelves. The first two lines describe the subject of the book. DS559.45 = Vietnamese Conflict 1st find letters alphabetically, then numbers in numerical order. The third line often represents the author's last name. H = Hallin Read the letter alphabetically, and the number as a decimal. (.35) The last line represents the date of publication/ copyright date. Arranged in chronological order.

Reference Books Great resource for getting general background information and an overview of your topic. Specialized encyclopedias can give in-depth information about your topic. Cannot be checked out. Use list of reference books at back of assignment packet for helpful suggestions of books for this project. Need to look up call numbers to find in stacks.

Finding books: Library On-line Catalog BC Library Catalog Use to find non-fiction, reference, and e-books Use Basic “Title begins with” search when know title of book Use Basic “Subject begins with” search to find other books on your topic Do a “title begins with” search for “Makers of America” from their resource list. Talk about collection, call number, status, and citation information. Do a “subject begins with” search for “Asian American”. Show subtopics—especially biography related—and “Asian Americans” below and second page. Use “Asian Americans—Social conditions” to show how to limit results and use e-books. Can also use the search bar at the top to search someone specific, or type in a heritage type. Search “Irish American”.
