Storage today = complex & expensive Storage challenges 9/18/2018 Rapid data growth - 40% YoY* Storage cost and infrastructure sprawl Complex data help protect & recovery Resource constraints The elephant in the room when it comes to storage is data growth. Whether you think it 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% - whatever number you think it is – it’s a lot and it’s driving a lot of decisions that IT people would rather not make. Whatever lens you use to look at storage, there are costs – for a lot of customers its many things. For some its mostly the hardware and hardware upgrades that never stop and the threat of going over a capacity cliff. For others its software licenses, for others its administrators time, for others its datacenter footprint, power and cooling and we could spend a lot of time talking about how these things overlap and compound each other, but the fact that data keeps growing creates an environment that is never quite stable and always at risk. Then there are the never-ending problems with data recovery – the itch that never seems to get scratched hard enough. People still use a lot of tape and that hurts because of the time and effort that go into managing tape and the inevitable mistakes that are made because the work is incredibly boring. Of course, people switched to dedupe backup systems which makes things a lot better expect there are still issues with off-site protection – whether they write data from disk to tape or replicate to another system at a remote site – because that gets expensive. Disk for backup is pretty great, but running out of capacity for all the copies that supposed to be retained is not –and that’s an edge that administrators are always walking on. IT teams could always stand to improve their DR capabilities – especially with respect to recovery – which is something they rarely get to practice because just staging a disaster takes more time and resources than they can afford. Where are they going to put all the data they are trying to restore? What does that do to their production operations? Can you actually learn anything when the goal becomes not upsetting the status quo when you are trying to simulate a disaster? Finally, there is the opportunity cost that storage exerts on the organization in terms of missed opportunites to do other things to help the business run better. When capital and human resources are tied up managing Storage today = complex & expensive * Source: EMC Digital Universe with Research and Analysis by IDC, 2014 © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. Redundant power supplies Fault tolerance of enterprise class storage Software feature Protects against How it works Controller failover Protection against the failure of a controller. The dual controllers are active/passive. In the event the active controller fails the passive controller automatically takes over. NVRAM mirrored across controllers through NTB. Storage spaces Protection in the event of one or more drive failures. Disk insert into and removal from pools. Nondisruptive software upgrades (NDU) Allows updates to be made to the operating system without taking downtime. The software is downloaded and updated on each controller. One controller is up at all times to continue processing and serving data. Dual controllers Redundant power supplies Network interfaces
