Sig Fig Math and Application

Warm-Up How many sig figs are in the following digits: 890 62.005 0.005 9.070 480. And take out your HW!!! 

Objectives Understand the reasons behind using sig figs is to say how uncertain we are with the materials we used Understand how to apply sig figs when measuring in the lab Apply the sig fig rules to mathematical problems

Agenda Drill Look at HW/Collect Sig Fig Math Sig Fig Practice Sig Fig Measurements and Scientific Notation Looking Forward Exit Slip HW

Sig Figs and Math!!  When multiplying and dividing, limit and round the least number of significant figures for any of the factors. 1.35 x 2.467 = 3.33045 1.35 has 3 sig figs 2.467 has 4 sig figs Since the lowest number is 3 sig figs, answer is: 3.33

Try On Your Own 0.021 x 3.23 x 100.1 = 150/4 =

0.021 x 3.23 x 100.1 = 6.8

150/4 = 40

More Math! When adding and subtracting, limit and round your answer to the least number of places in any of the numbers to make up your answer. 12.01 + 35.2 + 6 = 53.21 12.01 has 2 digits after decimal 35.2 has 1 digit after decimal 6 has 0 digits after decimal Since 6 does not have any digits after the number, the answer is: 53

123.2599 + 46.09 + 86.257 = 505 - 450.25 =

123.2599 + 46.09 + 86.257 = 255.61

505 - 450.25 = 55

Measurement Practice When making a measurement in lab, the last digit is always an estimate This means that you have to estimate between the markings on the measuring instrument Each measurement should be one place lower than the smallest marking on the measuring instrument

Sig Figs and Scientific Notation Other Note Sig Figs and Scientific Notation 6.02 x 1023 3 sig figs Only count the numbers in front

In Review Packet, you should be working on: HW In Review Packet, you should be working on: Sig Figs: 23 – 31 Metric and Scientific Notation: 32 – 36 Sig Fig Math: 37 – 40 Accuracy vs. Precision: 49

Measurement Mania Take the measurements in the lab with the correct number of sig figs You will have 1 minute at each station At lab station 8, start to work on Part 2 After we are in the lab, you will have 10 more minutes to finish the handout
