Next year’s transatlantic link A call for tender is starting with the following objectives: increase the transatlantic bandwidth to OC-12c (612Mbps) move the Chicago PoP to the STARLIGHT keep T3 commercial Internet access, but have an additional (backup?) access in Europe keep (ATM) connectivity to the STARTAP aim at direct peerings with North American R&D networks at the STARLIGHT over Gigabit Ethernet All this is a natural extension of the existing setup 9/18/2018 CERN Update & DataTAG Project

Dedicated lambda for research What is new is that the call for tender also includes an option for a 2.5 Gbps transatlantic lambda, which will be dedicated to Grid applied network research The aim is to have a dedicated testbed where new things can be tried out without affecting production traffic One of our major concerns is tcp/ip performance over large bandwidth*delay networks Single vs multi stream performance Auto-tuning 9/18/2018 CERN Update & DataTAG Project

The DataTAG Project

CERN Update & DataTAG Project Transatlantic lambda dedicated to research (no production traffic) 2.5 Gbps lambda between Chicago and Geneva Primarily to connect GRID initiatives in Europe and North America European partners: PPARC (UK), INFN (IT), University of Amsterdam (NL) and CERN, as project coordinator The budget is 3.9 MEUR 9/18/2018 CERN Update & DataTAG Project

CERN Update & DataTAG Project DataTAG Workplan WP1: Provisioning & Operations (CERN) Will be done in cooperation with DANTE Two major issues: Cost, can we afford it? Routing, how can the DataTAG partners have transparent access to the DataTAG circuit across GEANT and their national network? WP5: Information dissemination and exploitation (CERN) WP6: Project management (CERN) 9/18/2018 CERN Update & DataTAG Project

DataTAG Workplan (cont) WP2: High Performance Networking (PPARC) High performance Transport tcp/ip performance over large bandwidth*delay links Alternative transport solutions End to end inter-domain QoS Advanced network resource reservation 9/18/2018 CERN Update & DataTAG Project

DataTAG Workplan (cont) WP3: Bulk Data Transfer & Application performance monitoring (UvA) Performance validation End to end user performance Validation Monitoring Optimization Application performance Netlogger 9/18/2018 CERN Update & DataTAG Project

DataTAG Workplan (cont) WP4: Interoperability between Grid Domains (INFN) GRID resource discovery Access policies, authorization & security Identify major problems Develop inter-Grid mechanisms able to interoperate with domain specific rules Interworking between domain specific Grid services Test Applications Interoperability, performance & scalability issues 9/18/2018 CERN Update & DataTAG Project
