Cypress HX3 vs. Via Labs VL812 Docking Station Applications Bringing a full-featured solution to the SuperSpeed hub market

Consumer Products Demand Reliability Success of consumer products is driven by user experience Growth in internet retailers, especially for tech products User reviews readily available to consumers Even one negative review can ward off potential customers User experience is driven by reliability Product must function properly right out of the box and over the course of its lifetime Failure to do so guarantees a negative consumer review Reliability in a docking station is driven by the USB hub USB hub is a critical component in the docking station system A failure in the hub brings down the entire system Your USB hub must be reliable to maximize docking station user experience

VL812 Overview VL812 is a third-generation, 4 port USB3.0 one-chip hub controller featuring: 5.0 Gbps maximum data transfer rate USB3.0 low power states support Charging downstream ports Integrated 5V DC-DC switching regulator In-house USB PHY VLI VL812 VL812

Challenges Using VL812 1. Design requires more than 4 downstream ports Additional ports require more VL812 chips per board Higher # of ICs increases the Points of Failure (PoF) which reduces the system reliability 2. Design requires full-feature docking station Downstream charging when the host is disconnected Upstream port charging in mobile docking stations 3. Expensive end product requires reliable ICs Failure of inexpensive hub leads to failure of expensive docking station Via Labs is a young, Taiwanese company with limited experience (founded in July, 2008) Laptop Docking Station VL812 does not allow downstream devices to charge when laptop is undocked Have you faced any other challenges?

The Solution You Need A reliable and cost-effective solution that Supports more than 4 down stream devices Offers more features than the competition Comes with a reputation for high quality and support HX3 is the solution you need Shared link feature allows a USB2.0 and a USB3.0 device to share one port, allowing up to 8 total downstream devices Ghost charging and accessory charger adapter features enable HX3 to be part of a full-feature docking station solution HX3 is backed by Cypress’ reputation for quality and reliability, proven by over 1 billion USB shipments HX3 enables a full-featured and reliable docking station solution

VL812 vs. HX3 Feature VL812 CYUSBH11xx # of USB Ports 4 Die Size 9 x 9 x 0.85 mm 10 x 10 x 1 mm USB Battery Charging v1.2 Compliant Yes Shared Link No Ghost Charging Accessory Charger Adapter Apple Device Charging Fast Charge EEPROM Configurability Support SPI I2C Device Package 76 QFN 88 QFN The indicated parameters are in the perceived order of importance

HX3 Design Win Example – Laptop Docking Station HX3 Value Block Diagram Design Challenges Reduce the number of required hubs per board Improve system reliability Integrate more features into a high end docking station HX3 Solution Eliminates need for second hub through use of shared link feature which reduces BOM cost Reduces Points of Failure (PoF) by eliminating need for second hub Adds value by implementing features not present in other systems (ghost charge, accessory charger adapter) Docking Station Upstream Port Shared Link Implemented USB to Ethernet Downstream Port 1 Downstream Port 3 USB to Audio HX3 USB3.0 Hub USB to SD/MMC Downstream Port 2 Downstream Port 4 Shared Link Implemented Suggested Collateral USB to Video Datasheet: HX3 USB 3.0 Hub – Preliminary App Notes: USB Compliance Testing Overview Input Voltage Laptop Docking Station HX3 enables the creation of a full-feature docking station Competition Via Labs VL812, Genesys Logic GL3520, TI TUSB8040
