October 8, 2002 William J. Wepfer NCAA ACADEMIC REFORM REPORT TO THE GEORGIA TECH GENERAL FACULTY & GENERAL FACULTY ASSEMBLY October 8, 2002 William J. Wepfer

ADMISSIONS AND INITIAL ELIGIBILITY Increase from 13 to 14 the required number of high school core courses. Could increase further into the future. Georgia Tech’s Executive Admissions Committee was expanded to include four GT faculty plus Deborah Smith. New guidelines have been adopted.

CONTINUING ELIGIBILITY: ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE NCAA (current) GT NCAA (proposed) End of Year 1 --- 1.7 1.8 End of Year 2 2.0 End of Year 3 1.9 1.95 End of Year 4

CONTINUING ELIGIBILITY: ACADEMIC PROGRESS TO DEGREE NCAA (current) NCAA (proposed) End of Year 1 --- End of Year 2 25% 40% End of Year 3 50% 60% End of Year 4 75% 80%

CONTINUING ELIGIBILITY: ACADEMIC PROGRESS TO DEGREE Note: Student-athletes must complete 24 semester-hours before the start of their second year. Of these, only six semester hours can be “remedial”. Student-athletes must complete 6 semester-hours per term and 18 semester-hours per academic year. Must designate their degree program by the start of Year 3.

ISSUES AND ACTIONS President Clough led a mini-retreat in late August of key GT academic and athletic leaders. Early summer session precludes GT from being able to enroll most student-athletes in the summer before freshman year. Students will have to make progress in the core courses including English, math, science, and computing. Continued support for the Hearn Center.
