Startling Statistic or Statement Every 4 hrs, a sexual assault or rape occurs in the US military. This is an 8% increase over last year. Jessie is a normal three-year-old child except for one thing—she is a victim of child abuse. She has already been hospitalized with broken bones four times in her short life.

Rhetorical Question- What do Albert Einstein, Cher and Tom Cruise have in common? They have all overcome dyslexia, a learning disability that interferes with the ability to read. Think Geico

Question- Avoid- they do not allow for much expansion for beginners. Are redheads endanger of becoming extinct?

Humor- Funny story or happening. Possible joke…

Quotation John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country.” Then interpret and explain how it relates to your speech Can’t just read quote!!!!!!

Personal Experience Not necessarily yours… Tell a story the relates to your speech. Sgt. Daniel Cotner was a decorated war veteran. His job in the Marine Mortuary unit was sifting through dirt and debris of blast areas searching for pieces of his fallen comrades, and then, back at the hanger putting them back together. When he returned from Iraq he couldn’t put these images, sounds, smells behind him. On April 28, 2007 Cotner snapped and shot into a crowd of noisy revelers who through a bottle through his window. He thought it was a grenade.

Simile or Metaphor- Comparing two things Movies are great! In the film Find Nemo, Nemo’s dad- Marlin worried constantly about his son and became helicopter parent. We would like to think this phenomenon is isolated to fish bowls. Unfortunately, the number of helicopter parents is drastically increasing.

Short Story- Easily about the person or what you are going to talk about. Ashley Max-

Ineffective Intros So yeah my speech…. I am going to tell you about. . . I am going to give a speech about. . . This speech is about. . . My speech is on… So…. Who is John Wayne? He is….

Transition- Difficult- it is what connects your introduction to your thesis. Nemo’s dad over protectiveness is not just limited to the fish bowl but is present in our lives at an alarming rate. Today we are going investigate this helicopter parent by first-

Preview State your three main points! Today we will first hover to learn what is a helicopter parent Second, causes of this hovering Before finally some solutions to ground this parent. Need to have the numbers! Allows audience to understand where the speech is going.

Conclusions Wraps up your speech Restate thesis Review Tie in- Refer to attention getter. Fortunately, Marlin learned throughout the movie that he had to let Nemo make his own choices and mistakes.

Different Tie-ins Quotation Story Appeal 1 liners

Quotation I leave you with the words of a Hopi leader, “Evaluate the best there is in your own culture and hang on to it, for it will always be foremost in your life; but do not fail to take also the best from other cultures to blend with what you already have.”

Story My grandfather’s arrived to the US as a boat person from Vietnam. Whenever I get really down and frustrated, I close my eyes and picture the waves, the hunger, and the fear. I imagine myself trying to comfort and protect five terrified children for two full weeks, and I think, “This is nothing. If he could do that, I can go forward with my little problems for another day.”

Appeal Please remember that seat belts save lives and prevent serious injury. Buckle up. Wear your seat belt!

Intro Thesis Preview Restate Thesis Review Tie-in MUST ALL MAKE SENSE!!!!

Assignment- You will be writing introductions and conclusions. Intros and Conclusions must contain the components that we covered. You will draw 2 prompt cards.
