Is Holden Caulfield on a Quest? Every Trip is a Quest Is Holden Caulfield on a Quest?

Quests Usually Have— A knight A dangerous road A Holy Grail (something to aim for) A princess A dragon An evil knight

In Non-Fairytale Speak that Means-- *A quester *A place to go *A stated reason to go there (the quester doesn’t need to know he/she is looking for any particular thing) *Challenges and trials on the way to that place *A real reason to go there

Keep in Mind… *The real reason for a quest is not the stated reason *The real reason is always self- knowledge. *Questers are often young, aimless people

As A Group, decide why Holden’s experiences qualify as a quest… With a partner, complete a map of Holden’s “quest.” In pencil, map out Holden’s journey, marking the parts of the quest as you go (quester, starting place, places he’s going, challenges, people he meets, princess(es), moments when he realizes the real reason for his quest.) Bring me your 1st draft and I will give you a ½ piece of blank paper for each “step” of Holden’s quest. Use pencil and map out Holden’s quest using each ½ piece of blank paper as a point in his journey. Draw pictures to capture these moments. You might want to create a key for any symbols you use. Go over what you’ve drawn and written in marker and present.

On your map somewhere, Be sure to also include: Your analysis of the real reason for Holden’s quest Insights, if any, that Holden gathers from the people he meets along the way How Holden has changed throughout the quest (if at all)
