Colonial Government

What does Jay-Z have to do with colonial government? Essential Question What does Jay-Z have to do with colonial government?

Magna Carta In 1215, the English king was forced to establish new laws Not to take away any free man’s property or to imprison any free man without following procedures established by the laws of the land Guaranteed individuals the right to a fair trial by their peers or jury The King had to get the consent of a council of nobles (person with high ranking in the social/political class) before imposing new taxes

Magna Carta Did you know? Jay-Z’s 2012 album was titled “Magna Carta Holy Grail” Inspired by this English document in 1215 Jay-Z along with other artists were trying to “change the rules” of how albums would be released Wanted more power to be with the artists, not the record labels https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= XTWQzF1027I

Essential Question What 7 principle of the Constitution was derived from Magna Carta? What amendment in the Bill of Rights was inspired by Magna Carta?

English Bill of Rights 1689 The 1689 English Bill of Rights was a British Law passed by the Parliament of Great Britain Declared the rights and liberties of the people The 1689 English Bill of Rights had a massive influence on the colonies in North America and the Constitution of the United States

English Bill of Rights Summary Frequent call on Parliament (legislators) and free elections Members of Parliament should have freedom of speech No armies should be raised in peacetime Taxes could only be levied with the approval of Parliament No excessive fines should be imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishment inflicted

Essential Questions What 7 principle of the Constitution was derived from the English Bill of Rights What amendment in the Bill of Rights was inspired by the English Bill of Rights?

Self government in the colonies House of Burgesses (1619) Mayflower Compact (1620) Fundamental Orders of Connecticut (1639)

House of Burgesses 1619 1st legislature in the English colonies (Virginia) Met at a church in Jamestown Became a symbol of Representative government Consisted of 22 members who could make laws

Mayflower Compact 1620 Signed by 41 English colonists on the Mayflower Its purpose was to establish a temporary, legally-binding form of self-government Elected leaders http://www.history.com/topics/mayflower-compact

Fundamental orders of Connecticut 1639 First written Constitution Consisted of 11 orders or laws Set up structure and power in the Connecticut river towns Gave men more voting rights by extending voting rights to non church members Made more men able to run for elections Limited the power of the governor

Results of Colonial Self-Government 1. Colonists believed their rights as British citizens were secure 2. Distance from Britain caused colonists to be self-governed, self- sufficient 3. British eventually threatened colonists’ self-government – they rebelled
