Integration on the labour market 18-09-2018 18-09-2018 EFFAT conference at Cyprus- Integration of Migrant workers

Danish experiences of the integration project Vasco da Gama   Objectives for the project Language and competence section Cooperation of players Courses for “ front staff “ Experiences and conclusions   18-09-2018 EFFAT conference at Cyprus- Integration of Migrant workers

Danish experiences of the integration project Vasco da Gama A partnership project between the Copenhagen Municipality, the Copenhagen employment exchange, the employers represented by Horesta and RBF, and also the two private consulting firms, Facilitate.dk and Oxford Insight 18-09-2018 EFFAT conference at Cyprus- Integration of Migrant workers

Objectives for the project Develop activities and courses that can promote integration in the work place Identify of good practice for coordination between local and state activities Develop better business contacts Develop models for coordination between local and state initiatives Develop a course in communication practice for “front staff” and innovators 18-09-2018 EFFAT conference at Cyprus- Integration of Migrant workers

Language and competence section Over a period of three years, approximately 200 people have been through the system, none of them had permanent association with the labour market The majority gained permanent positions and approximately 25 % were offered a professional education 18-09-2018 EFFAT conference at Cyprus- Integration of Migrant workers

Cooperation of the players The cooperation with the authorities was built on conferences with different themes The contact between the municipalities and integration consultants and also the employment exchange Gathering experiences from the integration work in the municipalities Holding conferences which the players, members of the Danish Parliament and the press attended 18-09-2018 EFFAT conference at Cyprus- Integration of Migrant workers

Courses for “front staff“ Modular 1: Discrimination and the fight against discrimination Modular 2: Intercultural competence Modular 3: Is there a particularly ethnic labour market? Managers seminar: Without foundation – no change 18-09-2018 EFFAT conference at Cyprus- Integration of Migrant workers

Experiences and conclusions The businesses would like to employ migrant workers, but they don’t know all the rules and opportunities there are for receiving help and contributions towards mentoring arrangements, language courses, skills based education etc. 18-09-2018 EFFAT conference at Cyprus- Integration of Migrant workers

Experiences and conclusions The migrant workers should be offered real jobs with the same salary and on the same terms as the rest of the employees. Shorter introduction periods with training and language courses, can be arranged. It’s an advantage to create mentoring arrangements at the work place, so that there is always a colleague who can assist with advice and guidance 18-09-2018 EFFAT conference at Cyprus- Integration of Migrant workers

Experiences and conclusions It is important to hold the political debate in your organisation, with your members and not least the employees and the elected people in the organisation We have to be very aware of our roles as ”front staff”, meeting the ethnic fellow citizens and future colleagues We should not be afraid to challenge racist remarks when spoken out loud We have to tell the good side of story – create positive role models 18-09-2018 EFFAT conference at Cyprus- Integration of Migrant workers
