The Great Gatsby Chapter Three: The Party

The Party: how did our “party” relate to Gatsby’s in Chapter 3?

Close Reading Part One What is the point of this scene? What is the owl-eyed man pointing out about the books? How did this relate to our party?

Turn and talk: Owl Eyes and T.J. Eckleburg—similarities?

What connects these three? P. 41: “One of these gypsies…dances out alone on the canvas platform…the orchestra leader varies his rhythm obligingly for her…the erroneous news goes around that she is Gilda Gray’s understudy from the Follies. The party has begun.” P. 44: “The two girls and Jordan leaned together confidentially. ‘Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once.’ A thrill passed over all of us. The three Mr. Mumbles bent forward and listened eagerly” P. 50 “Girls were putting their heads on men’s shoulders in a puppyish, convivial way, girls were swooning backward playfully into men’s arms, even into groups, knowing that someone would arrest their falls”

How do we get to know Gatsby? How does this set him apart?

What do we learn about Jordan?

Close Reading Part Two: How does Jordan and Nick’s conversation about reckless driving apply to: Tom’s behavior with Daisy and Myrtle Gatsby’s behavior at his party

Homework Finish Chapter Three Questions Write one of the following to show your understanding: A thank you letter from one of the guests at Gatsby’s party A letter from one of Gatsby’s servants to his/her family about the party A diary entry from one of the guests that attended Gatsby’s party
