Romanticism A 19th Century art movement emphasizing the emotions painted in a bold, dramatic manner. Romantic artists rejected the cool reasoning of classicism to paint pictures of nature in its untamed state with dramatic action, often with an emphasis on the past. Romantics were more emotional, sometimes melancholic, even melodramatically tragic.
