Presentation transcript:

Romanticism A 19th Century art movement emphasizing the emotions painted in a bold, dramatic manner. Romantic artists rejected the cool reasoning of classicism to paint pictures of nature in its untamed state with dramatic action, often with an emphasis on the past. Romantics were more emotional, sometimes melancholic, even melodramatically tragic.

The Romantic Movement was philosophically opposed to the Neoclassicism that had pervaded European style and culture. Neoclassicism had been marked by an emphasis on cool reason, order, balance, and harmony. Bonus ? Virginia capitol & Monticello What Classical Greek structure is Virginia’s capitol similar to? Characteristics of Romanticism

Places a heavy emphasis on the individual, rather than the social group. Test experience against personal subjective mind, not established rules of society. Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog Friedrich, 1818

Prefer solitude over society, especially if quiet and contemplative – man or woman alone, looking within self for spiritual resources. Do you not see how necessary a world of pains and troubles is to school an intelligence and make it a soul? – John Keats (1795-1821), English Romantic poet.

This painting by Ferdinand Delacroix emtitled “Liberty Leading the People” depicts the Parisians taking up arms July 28, 1830, in the vain hope of restoring the republic. Emperor Louis Phillippe bought the painting and hid it away because he feared it would incite public unrest. A tendency toward rebellion, at least the severe questioning of existing institutions. Overthrow the traditions of the past.
