Bellwork Describe the difference in economies of the North and South List 3 political compromises/acts and explain the significance of each. What 3 technological advances were there during the Civil War. Which battle was the bloodiest in the Civil War and American history. Where did Lee surrender to Grant at?

Military & Civilian Leaders Abraham Lincoln He won the election of 1860 as the Republican candidate. He was re-elected in 1865 & assassinated later that year by John Wilkes Booth. He pardoned anyone from the South who took up arms against the Union. He was an opponent of slavery and issued the Emancipation Proclamation which declared the freedom of all slaves in the Confederacy.

Military & Civilian Leaders Jefferson Davis He was the President of the Confederacy. He had insisted on Southern independence which prolonged the war because he would not allow the Confederacy to quit despite a hopeless situation. He was arrested in 1865 and tried for treason. He was imprisoned for 32 years. Later the charges would be dropped and he would live out the rest of his days traveling & writing.

Military & Civilian Leaders Ulysses S. Grant Grant was a West Point graduate & fought in the Mexican War in 1848. He rose through the ranks during the Civil War until he was promoted by Lincoln to General-In-Chief in 1864. He forced the surrender of Lee’s army in 1865. He would be elected president in 1868.

Military & Civilian Leaders Robert E. Lee He was General in charge of the Confederate Army. When the Civil War began, he opposed the secession of his home state Virginia, but also turned down Lincoln’s offer to be in charge of the Union Army. Lee’s battlefield tactics kept the South in the war longer but it wasn’t enough to win. He also made some crucial mistakes by invading Maryland and Pennsylvania in the war.

Military & Civilian Leaders Stonewall Jackson He was a Confederate General who was Lee’s right hand man. Jackson was one of the most gifted tactical commanders in United States history. He is best known for his Shenandoah Campaign in 1862 when he defeated and turned away an advancing army of 60,000 with his 17,000 troops. He defeated and embarrassed General McClellan and McDowell during this campaign. During the Battle of Chancellorsville in the summer of 1863, the Confederacy was winning a battle and at dusk the Confederates continued the attacks into the night. Jackson had rode ahead of the confederate line to scout what the Union was doing. Upon his return in the middle of the night, he was mistook as a Union cavalry soldier and shot by nervous soldier. He had his left arm amputated and died of pneumonia 8 days later.

Military & Civilian Leaders William T. Sherman He was a Union General most known for “Sherman’s March to the Sea.” He was the right hand man of General Grant. He was a key figure in union victories at Shiloh & Vicksburg.
