Ms. Holmes Bell Work 10-17-10-28

Monday, October 17 Tell me what you did over Fall Break. Your response must be five sentences! Write legibly!

Tuesday, October 18 Write down these notes in your notebook. Direct and Indirect Objects: Direct objects answer the question what? or whom? after an action verb. Edgar Allan Poe wrote poems and stories. (wrote what?) Poe married Virginia Clemm. (married whom?) Indirect objects answer the question to whom? for whom? to what? or for what? After an action verb. The indirect object always appears between the verb and the direct object. Holidays bring people joy. (Holidays bring joy to whom?) The baker always saves us the last pastry. (The baker always saves the last pastry for whom?) Some people give their homes a holiday look. (Some people give a holiday look to what?)

Wednesday, October 19 Underline the direct object in the following sentences: 1. Many famous people throughout history have kept unusual and preposterous pets. 2. Napoleon’s wife Josephine dressed an orangutan in dinner clothes. 3. Charles V of France built houses and jeweled cages for his feathered pets.

Thursday, October 20 Underline the indirect objects in the following sentences. Some sentences have more than one indirect object: 1. People give their friends gifts on some holidays. 2. Children write their grandparents thank-you letters for gifts. 3. Many children bring their teachers small gifts.

Friday, October 21 Free Write 2 paragraphs! Write legibly! You are turning in this one!

Monday, October 24 Write down the following notes: According to the rules of formal grammar, who should be used in the subject position in a sentence, while whom should be used in the object position, and also after a preposition. In questions Who made this decision? [here, who is the subject of the sentence] Whom do you think we should support? [here, whom is the object of support] To whom do you wish to speak? [here, whom is following the preposition to] In practice, most people never use whom like this in speech because it sounds extremely formal. They don't use whom at all, and instead use who in all contexts, i.e.: Who do you think we should support? Who do you wish to speak to?

Tuesday, October 25 Choose “who” or “whom” to correctly finish the following sentences: 1. Kerry Ann, ____ hates spiders, wears bug-stomping boots wherever she goes. 2. Professor Borglum glared at Reggie, ____ spent the entire class drawing space aliens in the margins of the lecture outline. 3. Into the dark apartment walked David, ____ we nearly killed with surprise when everyone shouted “Happy Birthday” and jumped from behind the furniture.

Wednesday, October 26 Choose “who” or “whom” to correctly finish the following sentences: 1. The doctor explained that Rex, ___ we had rushed to the veterinary clinic, would not die after eating bananas that he stole off the kitchen counter. 2. Tim was embarrassed to say anything to Deidre, ____ had sautéed spinach caught between two teeth.

Thursday, October 27 Choose the pronoun that correctly completes each sentence. 1. Do you remember (who/whom) played Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind? 2. Walt Whitman is the American poet (who/whom) I like best. 3. Alicia is the one (who/whom) Mrs. Kris appointed as head of the committee. 4. I never found out (who/whom) sent the flowers.
