2.1 ELEMENTS

Elements 115 elements (120 now) About 92 are synthetic (man-made)

Elements Why do you think they needed a naming system? Name the symbols you have on your handout

Chemical Symbols Each symbol is 1-2 letters First letter is capitalized Comes from Greek symbols The names are called chemical symbols If the first letter is taken then you put the next letter

Chemical Symbols Exceptions Sodium is Natrium in latin = Na Potassium is Kalium in latin = K Lead is Plumbum in latin =Pb Gold is Aurum in Latin = Au Silver Argentum in latin = Ag

Describing elements Physical properties are put under qualitative or quantitative properties. Chemical properties describe a substance’s ability to react chemically with other substances to form new products. Reactivity is a chemical property.

Describing elements Metals are typically hard, shiny, malleable, ductile, and good conductors of heat and electricity. Non-metals tend not to have these properties and are usually gases or brittle solids at room temperature.
