States of Matter

Bell Work Draw on the piece of A4 paper what you think the particles in a solid liquid and a gas look like?

Correct your diagrams… Solid Liquid Gas Success Criteria 3 Diagrams with a diagram for liquid solid and gas. No spaces between the liquid particles Lines to show movement of gas particles Solid arranged uniformly

Agree Objectives Draw simple diagrams to model the difference between solids, liquids and gases (knowledge) Describe the states of matter in terms of the energy of their particles. (comprehension) Be able to describe the arrangement and movement of particles in solids, liquids and gases. (comprehension)

Prepare to Learn – How do we know that gas particles move? Watch the Brownian motion video, It shows a collection of smoke particles under a microscope. Write briefly in your books what you think is happening.

Brownian Motion Definition: The erratic random movement of microscopic particles in a fluid, as a result of continuous bombardment from gas molecules of the surrounding medium

Mini Review - Diffusion Ever wondered why your perfume will spread from one end of the room to the other? Try and explain why this happens using the knowledge you have learned so far about gases

Mini Review

Do Particles Have Energy? Yes! All particles have some form of energy including solids. Which state of matter do you think has the most energy and why? Think! – 30s Pair! – 30s Share!

Construct – Does melting ice expand? In winter many people report burst water pipes when the thaw sets in. Does the volume increase as ice changes back to water? Or is it the case that water expands when it freezes? Your task is to continue the plan to investigate this question.

Apply Knowledge Complete what a state worksheet. These will then be peer marked

Plenary Kerboodle interactive activity – states of matter

Review Draw simple diagrams to model the difference between solids, liquids and gases (knowledge) Describe the states of matter in terms of the energy of their particles. (comprehension) Be able to describe the arrangement and movement of particles in solids, liquids and gases. (comprehension)
