Standards RL.1.2 I can determine the theme or central idea of a literary text and analyze its development RL.1.1 I can cite several pieces of textual evidence to support my analysis W.1.2 I can write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information

Guided Practice/Review When determining theme look for: -conflict -recurring words, phrases, images Guided Practice/Review Conflict Recurrences 1st Woman describes Lucy Stone as a champion of women’s rights whereas Man refers to her as an “agitator. A disturber of the natural order.” (Lines 22 – 26) Lucy’s brother Luther embraces the idea the Lucy shouldn’t run faster than a boy, hinting at a larger idea that women shouldn’t outperform men because it’s “not right,” or goes against the natural order (Lines 44-48) “disturber of the natural order” compared to “it’s not right for a girl to run faster than a boy” both illustrate the conflict that women/girls are not shown equality in the early 1800s. Aunt Sally believes the only way for a woman to make her way in the world is to marry (Lines 73 – 75)

Guided Practice/Review When determining theme look for: -conflict -recurring words, phrases, images Guided Practice/Review Conflict Recurrences Bowman gives Lucy a back-handed compliment stating she reads as good as the reverend … too bad she’s a woman (Lines 137 – 142) Aunt Sally comments it’s too bad Lucy was born a girl instead of a boy (Lines 93 – 97) Luther comments “It’s not right for a girl to run faster than a boy” (Lines 48-49) Hannah thinks the idea of Lucy going to college is ridiculous (because she’s a girl) and Francis will not allow it. (Lines 160 – 169) Lucy goes against the time period’s ideals and states she’ll be the first person to “turn the world upside down” (Lines 184 – 188) Write a brief summary of the drama which includes the theme and textual evidence to support the theme

Work Period Materials Needed: - Independent Practice Technology Lit. book Pencil Conflict & recurrences chart Additional notebook paper (optional) Computer Directions: Finish reading Lucy Stone p. 838 – 841 and add your findings to your conflict and recurrences chart. Note what events contribute to the conflict and what words, images, phrases recur throughout the story. Your goal is to find the theme and write a brief summary of how the author develops the theme that includes evidence from the text to show how the author developed the theme throughout the story. Turn in chart to class inbox when finished. Due today. Complete the following tabs for the Achieve 3000: “She Led the Way” Before reading poll Article Activity After reading poll Thought question (use the table) NOTE: this is a 20-point class work grade and does NOT count toward your weekly A3Ks

Closing What is the theme of Lucy Stone? What pieces of evidence help support this theme? (Need at least 3) HOME LEARNING: Bring lit. book to class next time 2 weekly A3K Choice Articles due by Sunday of following week, each week. Week 5’s due 2/7. Illuminated Letter 2/9.
