AQUATIC NUISANCE SPECIES Invasive or Alien Species

ANS are nonindigenous aquatic species that pose significant ecological and economic threats to aquatic ecosystems. This can include fish, aquatic plants, algae, invertebrates, mussels, viruses, and other aquatic pathogens Some things to think about: How long before they stop being “alien”? How long do they have to stay in the environment? People swim and interact with an environment like the sea they inhabit only part of the time as swimmers, boaters, fishermen and so on.

Official Definition As per Executive Order 13112 an "invasive species" is defined as a species that is: 1) non-native (or alien) to the ecosystem under consideration and 2) whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health. Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) are non indigenous species that threaten the diversity or abundance of native species, the ecological stability of infested waters, or any commercial, agricultural, aquacultural or recreational activities dependent on such waters.
