Middle Colonies

NEW YORK Originally settled as Dutch as New Netherland for fur trading. New Amsterdam was a major city comprised of Europeans and African slaves. Religion did not play that much of a part. People were able to practice their religion freely

New York In 1664, New Netherland surrendered land to English without a shot being fired. King Charles II gave the land to his brother, the Duke of York and they changed the name to New York.

What people settled new York before the British? Dutch Swedes Germans French

The Duke of York thought that New York was too big to govern easily. NEW JERSEY The Duke of York thought that New York was too big to govern easily. He gave up some land to friends Lord Berkeley and Lord Cartaret. They set up a new colony, New Jersey, which was a proprietary colony.

New Jersey Settlers came from many countries. In a proprietary colony, the king gave land to one or more people. These proprietors could divide the land and make laws for it. Settlers came from many countries.

In 1702, New Jersey became a royal colony, which is a colony under the direct control of the English crown.

Pennsylvania The king issued a royal charter in 1681 naming Penn proprietor of a new colony, later called Pennsylvania. Penn called for fair treatment of Native Americans. Penn called his colony a “holy experiment”

Penn’s Holy Experiment Penn welcomed settlers of different faiths and people from many countries, including Germany. Other colonists called the Germans Pennsylvania Dutch, from the word “Deutsch,” which means German.

Delaware Broke away from PA in 1704. Settlers did not want to send assembly delegates all the way to Philadelphia
