Chapter 5 Lesson 1 What are cells?

Cell The basic unit of structure and function of all living things. Plant cell Animal cell

tissue A group of cells that work together to perform a certain function.

Organ A group of tissue that works together to perform a certain function.

Organ System A group of organs that works together to do a job for the body.

Organism A living thing.

Cells as building blocks Most cells can only be seen by a microscope. All living things are made of cells. All cells share some characteristics. Different kinds of cells do different jobs.

Cells as building blocks Some simple organisms are single-celled. Plants and animals contain many cells. Plants and animals have different types of cells each with its own job.

Cells as building blocks The different cells work together to carry out the functions that keep an organism alive. Your body has cells that… help you break down food. Carry oxygen to other cells. Carry away waste materials.

Cells as building blocks Cells contain organelles. Each organelle has a specific job to do that keeps the cell alive.

Cell Structures and Functions Plant and animal cells have certain organelles in common. Cell membrane holds a cell together and separates it from its surroundings. Nucleus directs all of the cell’s activities. Chromosomes are inside the nucleus and contains all the information about the cell.

Cell Structures and Functions Cytoplasm is a jelly like material that contains chemicals that help keep a cell healthy. Mitochondrion release energy from food to the cell. Vacuoles store food, water, or waste material. They are larger in plant cells than animal cells. Vesicles transport materials within the cell.

Cell Structures and Functions Plant cells have some structures that are different from animal cells. Cell Wall surrounds the cell membrane to help support the plant. Chloroplast inside the cytoplasm makes food for the plant.

Cell Structures and Functions

Cells, Tissue, Organs, Systems The cells in multi-celled organism, like you, work together. Cells that work together to perform a specific job form a tissue.

Cells, Tissue, Organs, Systems There are four types of tissue in the human body. Connective tissue make up the bone and cartilage of your skeleton. Blood is a type of connective tissue. Epithelial tissue in your skin and internal organs.

Cells, Tissue, Organs, Systems Muscle tissue makes up most of your body. Whenever you move muscle tissue moves your skeleton. Nervous tissue helps you think, talk, walk, and see. Found in your brain, spinal cord, and nerves.

Cells, Tissue, Organs, Systems

Cells, Tissue, Organs, Systems Organ systems Your body has many organ systems. The stomach is part of the digestive system. Lungs are part of the respiratory system. Single celled organisms don’t have tissue or organs. The single cell has to do everything to keep the cell alive and healthy.
