Cells as building blocks Most cells can only be seen by a microscope. All living things are made of cells. All cells share some characteristics. Different kinds of cells do different jobs.

Vacuoles store food, water, or waste material. They are larger in plant cells than animal cells. Vesicles transport materials within the cell.
