Grade 4 ELA 2016-2017

Pacing Guide for 2016-2017 School Year Marking Period 1- (9/8-12/7) - Module 1A You will have the option of completing Module 1A just like last year. This includes completing Module 1A as is OR completing units 1 and 2 and also completing the writer’s workshop model. The different option that is being presented this year is completing Module 1A as a reading workshop model. See the Reader’s Workshop “How To” for more information on this. Marking Period 2- (12/8-3/20)- Module 3B- This module will be taught “as is” for units 1 and 2. You then have the option of completing unit 3 or completing the writer’s workshop model. Marking Period 3- (3/21-6/16)- Module 4- You will have the choice of completing this module “as is” or completing the reading workshop model. You will also have the option of completing unit 3 or completing the writer’s workshop model.

Module 1A: You have 2 choices this year The Engage NY module or Reader’s Workshop version The Engage NY student workbook has not been changed and all students will be receiving a packet. The Reader’s Workshop consist of: How To Teacher lesson & material packet Student notebook packet & Supplemental Materials Packet (Greek Mythology, Folktales & Fables etc.) All will be sent to your buildings.

Eliminate Unit 2A entirely and replace it with Unit 3B

Justification for eliminating 2A & implementing Module 3B continued: W4.1 Writing an opinion piece A – introduce topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure B – provide reasons that are supported by facts and details C – link opinion and reasons using words and phrases D – provide concluding sentence W4.7 Conduct short research projects W4.9 Draw evidence from literary or informational text to support analysis, reflection & research

Justification for eliminating 2A & implementing Module 3B continued: SL4.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussion A – Come to discussions prepared & having read or studied required material B – Follow agreed upon rules for discussions & carry out assigned roles C – Pose and respond to specific questions to clarify and follow up on information D – Review the keys ideas expressed and explain their own ideas and understandings E – See to understand and communicate with individuals from different perspectives & cultural backgrounds

Justification for eliminating 2A & implementing Module 3B continued: L4.1A Use relative pronouns and relative adverbs L4.1B Form and use the progressive verb tenses L4.2C Use a comma before a coordinating conjunction in a composed sentence L4.3 Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, listening L4.3B Use punctuation for effect L4.3C Differentiate between context that call for formal English and situations where informal discourse is appropriate L4.4A Use context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase L4.4C Consult reference materials both print and digital to find the pronunciation and determine or clarify the precise meaning of keys and phrases

Module 4 Changes/Pacing Guide for 2016-2017 As per the recommendation of the Instructional Review Committee, The Hope Chest by Karen Schwabach needs to be taught in the classroom (instead of sending home)
