By the end of this session, you will… Learning Goals By the end of this session, you will…  Have an increased understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)  Recognize that UDL is a learning stance, a mindset and philosophy; not an initiative or an activity

Todd rose Ted Talk: The Myth of Average

Who's your Billy? Reflect on a learner that comes to mind after watching this video?  What is one thing that you could try to remove barriers for learning?

Learning for all

Looking at our existing resources with a deeper perspective

Be prepared to share Surprises or Challenges Activity Read over the Myths and Facts about UDL Be prepared to share Surprises or Challenges that you had when reading.

There are 3 Principles.9 key points and 36 check points

Look Fors in a UDL Learning environment 1) The goal is clear and accessible to all learners. 2) What options are available in the environment that promote achievement of the goals? 3) What noticeable barriers prevent learners from learning the goal? How can the UDL guidelines help to overcome these barriers? 4) In listening to the environment what do you hear that suggests expert learning is happening? 5) What do you hear and see that indicates that this learning environment is supportive of all learners and recognizes learner variability as being the norm?

Udl Applications What is the goal of this lesson? What considerations need to be made for the learner? Strengths and barriers to learning. How can student engagement be increased?  How can the content be represented in multiple Ways? How can the thinking be captured in various ways?

UDL & the Learning Environment - Provide multiple seating options - Provide multiple task regions in the classroom - Provide a safe and inviting environment - Decrease visual and auditory stimulation  - Have choice be embedded in the environment

Recap Universal Design for Learner puts the learner at the center of learning. UDL is a learning stance, a mindset and philosophy; not an initiative or an activity When you are teaching the "WHAT" don't specify how. When you are teaching the "HOW" don't specify what.

What's next? How can you promote that UDL is a learning stance, a mindset and philosophy in your school with educators? What are your next steps and what supports do you need to help make this happen?
