CEW Standards: A Closer Look Career Readiness Memories Think of one career-readiness activity that happens in a/the school in which you work. Or your district Or completed by yourself, your child On the blue index card write a “title” for the activity With a neighbor(s) briefly discuss and describe the activity. Include all the details you can remember including: how long it took/takes to complete/the duration what it involved/required by students to be done what class or course it was/is completed in? how it was/is graded or evaluated what follow-up occurs/occurred after/later for it?

Background and History Career Education and Work Standards: 22 Pa. Code § 339.31 requires all school entities to have a written plan for the development and implementation of a comprehensive, sequential program of guidance services for kindergarten through 12th grade. The plan must be designed to promote equal opportunity and address the guidance service areas outlined in 22 Pa. Code § 339.32, including guidance services provided to AVTSs and implementation of CEW standards. The local board of school directors must approve the plan, and upon request make it available upon to the Secretary of Education. Brian

Background and History In 2006, the Pennsylvania State Board of Education promulgated regulations (22 Pa. Code Chapter 4) establishing the state Academic Standards for Career Education and Work (CEW Standards). These standards describe what students should know and be able to do at four grade levels (3, 5, 8 and 11) in four areas: • Career Awareness and Preparation (Section 13.1); • Career Acquisition (Getting a Job) (Section 13.2); • Career Retention and Advancement (Section 13.3); and • Entrepreneurship (Section 13.4). CEW Standards: A Closer Look Using the Academic Standards for Career Education and Work (CEW) packet, find the strand, grade level, and standard(s) that you believe most closely matches the activity you wrote about and write those three underneath the title on your blue index card. Questions: -Did you have difficulty matching your activity to the CEW standards? If so, why? -Does your activity fully encompass the description of the standard as you read it? -What did you notice about the CEW standards as you read them?

Background and History The Future Ready PA Index: (A Dashboard Interface) A more holistic tool for communities to measure school success Less reliant on point-in-time standardized test scores Comprehensive measures that values school’s efforts to help all students learn, grow, and succeed in the classroom and beyond Federal Accountability – Select indicators from the Future Ready PA Index used to identify CSI and TSI schools as required by ESSA Educator Evaluation – Building level score as required by Act 82 using current formulas and weightings identified in regulations; not part of Future Ready PA Index Brian

The Career Readiness Indicators CEW Standards: A Closer Look The Career Readiness Indicators ○Were designed to ensure that all students have access to career exploration and preparation activities that are standards-aligned and evidence-based. ○Based on the percent of students who demonstrate meaningful engagement in career exploration and preparation and implementation of individualized career plans through separate, specific measures based on grade level benchmarks aligned to the Pennsylvania Career Education and Work Standards (CEW)

Career Education and Work Standards CEW Standards: A Closer Look Career Education and Work Standards ●The CEW Standards were made mandatory for integration into the general curriculum in 2006 by the PA State Board of Education. ●Many schools and districts have been implementing the CEW standards for years and PDE would like to give them credit for doing this via the Career Readiness Indicators. ●The CRI are an opportunity to validate schools that have been addressing CEW standards and to build enthusiasm for career readiness. The indicators are not meant to “threaten” schools into compliance. ●Reporting CRI is an opportunity to be recognized for the good work that is in some cases already being done in schools

Data Reporting and Monitoring Grade 5 Benchmark: must be met to indicate if each individual student has met the indicator outcomes. ●Six (6) total pieces of evidence are needed. ●Two of the six must be completed by the conclusion of grade 3. ●Two of the six must be completed in grade 4. ●Two of the six must be completed in grade 5. ●Each of the four Career Strands must be addressed at least once in the six total pieces of evidence. Data Reporting and Monitoring Grade 8 Benchmark: must be met to indicate if each individual student has met the indicator outcomes. ●Six pieces of evidence, in addition to the K-5 evidence, must be completed by the conclusion of grade 8. ●One of those six must be the student’s individualized career plan ●Each of the four Career Strands must be addressed at least once in the six total pieces of evidence. Data Reporting and Monitoring Grade 11 Benchmark: must be met to indicate if each individual student has met the indicator outcomes. ● Eight pieces of evidence, in addition to the K-5 and 6-8 evidence, must be completed by the conclusion of grade 11. (Twenty total pieces for regularly enrolled students.) ● At least two in grades 9, 10, and 11—minimum requirement, still won’t meet benchmark because students need a total of eight. ● Each of the four Career Strands must be addressed at least once in the eight total pieces of evidence. At least two pieces of evidence for the 9-11 grade band must demonstrate implementation of the student’s individualized career plan.

Successful Completion of CEW Evidence Successful Completion of CEW Participation alone does not demonstrate sufficient evidence of successful completion Evidence must suggest each student has engaged in meaningful, standards-aligned activities, experiences, or tasks that enhance career awareness, preparation, readiness, and entrepreneurship Not all students must have the same pieces of evidence; instead the evidence should be individualized to each student Mike

Evidence (Yellow Handout) Checklist: Is this CEW activity, task, or experience… Aligned to CEW Standards Evidence-based? Requiring meaningful engagement by the student? Connected to a student’s interest, skills, goals? Aligned to the needs of our community or region? One for which all students have access? Part of a student’s individualized career plan? Data Reporting and Monitoring -Retrieve the post-it note from where you placed it on the CEW Career Strand -Using the yellow “evidence” sheet handout, determine what evidence can/is used to document this activity

Data Reporting and Monitoring Not all students must have the same pieces of evidence. Individualized to student interests and learning styles, transition plans for students in special education programs, and activities for English learners, students in CTE programs, and students in online or alternative education placements. Accuracy Certification Statement verifies the accuracy of the data, the successful completion of student evidence, and the quality of the program. Statewide assessment monitoring verifies the data reported and/or graded student artifacts. Performance is factored into the calculations for Comprehensive or Targeted Support. May be subject to additional auditing for identified schools.
