Essential Question What do artifacts reveal about the ancient world?

Let’s Make a Ushabti Learning Targets I understand Egyptian beliefs about the afterlife. I can demonstrate how to write in Egyptian hieroglyphics. I can explain the purpose of an Egyptian ushabti. I can create an image of a ushabti.

Hieroglyphics = a system of writing that uses picture symbols to represent words or sounds.

Hieroglyphics are the emoji of the Ancient World

Writing Phonetically Words in Hieroglyphics were written phonetically. English is so not phonetic! But we can fix it. Eckstein Middle School becomes ĕkstīn mĭdĕl skūl (pretty kūl, huh?) Long and Short Vowels ă = tăp ā = āpe ĕ = bĕt ē = ēat ĭ = sĭt ī = īce ŏ = hŏt ō = ōwn ŭ = ŭp ū = ūse

Match Each Sound to the Symbol

Write out the Symbols ĕ k s t ī n m ĭ d ĕ l s k ū l

Write out the Symbols

Hieroglyphics were usually written vertically And there were no spaces between words. All of the symbols run together.

Cartouche A cartouche is sort of like an important nameplate.  Ancient Egyptians made cartouches for kings, queens, and other high-ranking people in the kingdom.

Let’s Practice ă = tăp ā = āpe ĕ = bĕt ē = ēat ĭ = sĭt ī = īce ŏ = hŏt ō = ōwn ŭ = ŭp ū = ūse Sarah = sărŭ Gilwit = gĭlwĭt Terri = tĕrē Stone = stōn

Closure Put all papers in Field Notes. Put Field Notes in the middle of the table. Wait for further directions.
