Abiotic vs. Biotic SPI 0607.2.3 Identify the biotic and abiotic elements of the major biomes.

Introduction An ecosystem is a community of living organisms, in conjunction with the nonliving components of their environment, interacting as a system. These biotic and abiotic components are linked together through nutrient cycles and energy flows.

Check for Understanding What is the definition of an ecosystem? What two factors in an ecosystem are linked together?

Answers An ecosystem is a community of living organisms, together with the nonliving components of their environment, interacting as a system. These biotic and abiotic components are linked together.

Definitions Abiotic factors refer to non-living physical and chemical elements in the ecosystem. Abiotic resources are usually obtained from the lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere. Biotic factors are living or once-living organisms in the ecosystem. These are obtained from the biosphere and are capable of reproduction. Ask yourself if it is made out of cells…

Check for Understanding What is the definition of an abiotic factor in an ecosystem? What is the definition of a biotic factor in an ecosystem?

Answers Abiotic factors refer to non-living physical and chemical elements in the ecosystem. Biotic factors are living or once-living organisms in the ecosystem.

Examples

Check for Understanding What was one example of a biotic factor on the last slide? What was an example of an abiotic factor on the last slide?

Answers Biotic- people, animals, and plants Abiotic- rocks, water, air, wind, temperature, light

Practice Is it A (for Abiotic) or B (for Biotic)? The lake A fish A boat Algae Sunlight Cotton Tshirt Turkey Sandwhich on Wheat Bread Sunscreen

Answers Lake- A Fish- B Boat- A Algae- B (Protist- not Plant) Sunlight-A Cotton Tshirt – B Turkey Sandwhich on Wheat Bread- B Sunscreen- A (minerals or chemicals)

How About Harder Questions??? Name abiotic factors in a desert biome. Name biotic factors in a tundra.

Abiotic Factors in Desert Sand Rocks Hot temperatures during the day Cold temperatures at night Dry, Very little Water Wind Poor soil Air Elevation

Biotic Factors in Tundra Artic Fox Artic Hare Artic Willow Grass Mosses Lichens Lemmings Caribou Muskox Polar Bear Snowy Owl

The Hardest question ever… What are some biotic and abiotic factors in our classroom ecosystem???

Review Define Biotic factors. Define Abiotic factors.
