Welcome back! January 4th, 2018 Thursday Do Now Find your seat! Look for your name on the list on the front whiteboard and choose a seat in the corresponding pod. Take a syllabus (on the front table). Complete the student survey (on the front table). You will have five minutes once the bell rings. Note: Do Now's are INDEPENDENT and QUIET exercises. Thank you 

Attendance/Introductions When I call your name, raise your hand, say “here,” and tell the class one interesting thing about yourself. My dream career is to be… I really don’t like… I’m good at… I’d like to get better at… I’ve never… One of my biggest fears is… This summer, I… One of my goals is to… One celebrity I would like to meet is… The most interesting place I’ve ever gone is… Something people don’t know about me is… At home, I have… My favorite hobbies are… Or, create your own! ☺

What does “poetry” even mean? Defining poetry What does “poetry” even mean?

Journal heading At the top of your paper, you need: Your name 1/4/18 Creative Writing Assignment Title (For today, it’s “Defining Poetry”)

Anticipatory Guide to Poetry Look over the Poetry Anticipation Guide and write whether you agree or disagree with each statement.

Anticipatory Guide to Poetry Compare your answers with your group. What do you all agree with? What do you all disagree with? 1. Once you identify what your group has in common, use the information with your group to create your own definition of poetry. Make sure you each have something written down – you’ll be expected to share your answers 

Poetry: What we think Words that show emotion Lines and stanzas Use rhythm Different style – different way of writing Include songs Emotionally charged If it’s writing and it’s centered around emotion, it’s a poem

Beef Stew: Applying OUR DEFINITION 2. Read the recipe for Tomas J. Vietorisz’s beef stew. Is this poetry? Why or why not? Be as specific as you can in your answer.

Beef Stew: Applying OUR DEFINITION 3. Now read the other side for Tomas J. Vietorisz’s piece “Beef Stew (serves 6-8).” Is this poetry? Why or why not? Does it fit our class definition of poetry? Be specific in your answer.

Exit Slip Write the worst poem you possibly can. As long as it’s school appropriate, you can write anything you want. Just make sure it’s a terrible poem of at least six lines (minimum three words each). And remember, you need two things by the next time I see you: Your completed student survey A creative writing notebook and folder or binder (notebook will be for a grade)
