John B. Anderson and Ken Moore Report on IEEE Press John B. Anderson and Ken Moore IEEE Press Editorial Board Meeting San Diego, CA, 23-24 Aug. 2013 9/18/2018

IEEE Press was reviewed earlier this year As an Institute-wide entity, IEEE Press receives oversight and review from the Publication Services and Products Board (PSPB) Other Institute-wide entities are Proceedings of the IEEE, IEEE Spectrum, The Institute and IEEE Access Review consisted of a staff report and February presentation to PSPB by John Anderson and Ken Moore Following slides were included in the presentation and are updated here 9/18/2018

Some highlights from IEEE Press Report to PSPB Project signings have increased over three years, with a slowdown in 2012 due to Wiley staff changes Introduction of e-books to the IEEE Press program was a significant financial boost Permitted us to create a new member benefit as well as a revenue-producing subscription package In the near term, Press needs formats that will perform well in IEEE’s overall mobile strategy 9/18/2018

IEEE Press mission statement “The IEEE Press publishes texts, references, handbooks and monographs to meet present and future professional and educational needs of IEEE members, potential members, and others in the fields of interests to IEEE. “Our mission is to bring to our audience the best and most up-to-date materials in the fields, whether these are works originated by the Press or published in cooperation with another entity. “By our emphasis on consistent quality, the Press will strive to attract the leading authors in the profession.” Adopted October 1996 9/18/2018

Sales through Wiley showed an increase of more than 20% in 2012 9/18/2018

Unit sales through Wiley grew by 10% in 2012 9/18/2018

Signings topped 50 in 2011 before staff change in 2012 9/18/2018

Published output is forecast at 35 IEEE Press titles in 2013 9/18/2018

Two trends compared 9/18/2018

About 47% of Press titles* come from series *Not including CS, Standards Titles “Other” includes new series, such as Information & Communication Networks Security Professional Engineering Communication Systems Science and Engineering ComSoc Guides to Communications Technologies … plus older, inactive series, such as RF and Microwave, Understanding Science & Technology

Future directions for IEEE Press: Technology areas The book continues to be an ideal vehicle to develop multi-disciplinary approaches Presents a broad canvas, accessible to all, to trace the intersections of technologies IEEE Press can expect to see continued viability for collections like its biomedical series Multi-disciplinary topics of interest, like Smart Grid, have a ready home in our book program 9/18/2018

Competitive position in key technology areas Source: Publishers’ Alley Market Share 2011 9/18/2018

IEEE Press took a major step with the launch of a dual eBook program in 2010 The IEEE-Wiley eBooks Library, now over 600 titles, was created as an add-on subscription product for IEEE’s library subscribers IEEE eBook Classics, now numbering over 260 titles, are older IEEE Press copyright books available for free to IEEE members

In current Press business model, eBook sales determine success 9/18/2018

Future directions for IEEE Press: Publishing formats The IEEE-Wiley eBook Library has succeeded has a library product largely for two reasons: Integrated search with IEL serves up relevant PDF book chapters with journal and conference content For library customers, perpetual access to eBooks mimics the content possession they had with print books However, the product is maturing rapidly It’s imperative for IEEE Press to experiment with other formats, such as ePub for mobile devices A mobile strategy is a high priority for IEEE, and Press can make a unique contribution 9/18/2018

Some pointers for the future of IEEE Press and its products Regardless of medium, there will always be a need for ‘book-like objects’ that compile knowledge in specific fields Increased personalization and interactive content in IEEE Xplore will permit ongoing redefinition of a ‘book’ Mobile devices and enhanced content may enable users to ‘build their own books,’ alone or in collaborative work teams Technology is already available for customization, but business models and user preferences are not fully formed A period of experimentation lies ahead, and it probably will be user-driven 9/18/2018
