Bell-Ringer Question A Dall’s Porpoise has a maximum dive of -330 feet. A Pilot Whale has a maximum dive of -1970 feet. How much deeper can a Pilot Whale dive than a Dall’s Porpoise?

ABBY I got an answer of 1640 feet.

ABBY 1

jake My answer is 1640 feet. I used a vertical number line. I graphed a point for -330 feet and another point for -1970. I subtracted the integers to determine they were 1640 units apart.

jake 3

olivia The problem says “how much deeper” so I knew that was a keyword for subtraction. I subtracted -330 – (-1970), but I had to use the additive inverse and it was -330 +1970. The signs were different, so I subtracted and took the sign of the number with the larger absolute value and my final answer is 1640. The Pilot Whale dives 1640 feet more than the Dall’s Porpoise.

grant My answer is -2300. I added -330 and - 1970. Since the signs are the same, I added the two numbers and kept the same sign.
