MISSION DEVELOPER TRAINING – 2ND Six Months February - 2010

MISSION DEVELOPER ISSUES First/Second Six Months “Where am I?” “Why did I agree to this?” “What am I going to do?” “How am I going to get all this done?” ???

New Question: “How am I doing?” Checking in with spouse, DEM, Coach Nurturing spiritual life (i.e. joined a congregation, finding devotional time) Completing/evaluating First Six Month Plan Connecting with area colleagues Creating/continuing personal interests/hobbies How has the community come to know you?

New Question: “Why not do this? Becoming more comfortable with life on the street Call is affirmed in meeting community leaders and residents Growing acquaintance with community Building relationships both personal and professional This work is challenging and fun!

New Question: “What am I going to do next?” Stick with the plan Prioritize…Prioritize Do a few things very well rather than trying to do many things not well at all Consult with coach, DEM, and God Decisions shaped by sense of identity and context

New Question: “How do I involve others?” Identifying, inviting, equipping, and supporting others for leadership is modeling healthy discipleship Giving leadership away is healthy for everyone Ongoing review of pastoral role Invite community leadership to inform missional direction

Ministry Planning “Lutheran Key” Three critical areas for the first 6-12 months of ministry: Mission Identity Common Purpose Shared Vision Rouse/Van Gelder, “A Field Guide for the Missional Congregation”

Ministry Plan for Months 6-12 Identify and invite 4 or 5 people to take an initial leadership role in developing a Common Purpose and Shared Vision. Start creating the bifocal vision. Keep meeting with people. Expand conversations to those who are yet to be heard. Start looking at how program areas of ministry will support the Shared Vision. Start introducing the trifocal vision for ministry to leadership and provide reminders.

Contextual Learning Where do people find community? How/where are people looking for hope? How/where are community concerns voiced? What takes life away in the community? Who are the community leaders? Some initial glimpses on how this ministry will make a difference?

New Ministry Process

New Ministry Priorities for First Twelve Months Invitation Contextual Multiple streams Hospitality Genuine Both begin to address questions and concerns around “belonging”

New Ministry Invitation Holy Spirit has invited this faith community to begin New ministry invites: Personal invitations Web site Signs (directional) Newspaper stories Marketing/PR for name, logo, material

New Ministry Hospitality Everyone is welcome! Contextual hospitality values community Constant attention to insider/outsider language and practice Ministry is shaped by hospitality (i.e. willingness to be changed)

Faith Practices Worship Prayer/Bible study Discipleship (Faith in daily life) Service Holistic stewardship Invitation/Outreach Ministry leadership

Next Six Months From Invitation and Hospitality, what is going well and what is to be strengthened in the next six months? From Invitation and Hospitality, what will you start in the next six months? What Faith Practices have you started? What Faith Practices will be started in the next six months? How are Invitation and Hospitality embedded in each faith practice?
