Welcome students to the assembly and explain that they will be hearing about an exciting whole school event today called Health Heroes. Can anybody name me famous superheroes? Have a white board and explain these are the key words for the assembly- explain what they mean (tick as we go through them): Vaccination Malnutrition Nutritious food Also going to learn about 3 key rights Rights to healthcare Rights to clean water and nutritious food Rights to shelter

Address the students and ask them the question ‘what would happen if you fell ill at school today? What would be the sequence of events?’ (hopefully they would respond with the following):   Tell the teacher and they would be concerned Teacher calls your parents Parents pick you up and take you home Warm food and drink Given medicine Tucked into bed If the next day you were still unwell you would be taken to the doctors or even hospital if necessary Suggest some professions and ask students to stand if they want to be a policeman, nurse, teacher, Olympian, singer, actress, pilot for instance. Keep asking for suggestions until all students are standing.

Key messages: So here in the UK when we are ill we have access to: Shelter (home) Clean water and nutritious food Health Care (medicine, doctor, hospital) These are all things we take for granted and are our rights here in the UK. These are essentials in life- you need these things in order to survive. Everyone should have these rights.

Is there a difference between something you want and something you need (rights)? A ‘need’ is something you have to have in order to survive. For example food- if you don't eat you will die. A ‘want’ is something you would like to have in that moment. For example a new ipod. Ask them the following, ‘is this a want or need’: Mobile phone? Bicycle? Food? Medicine? Ice-cream? Education? Established that some things you NEED to survive. Everybody deserves to be able to have the things they need to survive- these should be their rights. Do you think all children should have these rights or just children in the UK?   Shelter (home) Nutritious food and water Health Care (medicine, doctor, hospital)

In some of the countries we work- people don’t have the things they need to live healthily: shelter, food or health care. These should be their rights! How unfair is that?! However there are real life health heroes in these communities making a difference..... sometimes heroes don’t look like a ‘traditional hero’ with a mask and cape....  

Food- Laos Problem: One in four children in the villages we work with are malnourished. We are working with communities so they can learn about the nutritional values of different foods, ensuring food is available throughout the year and addressing malnutrition among children. Hero: This is Noum and his family they live in a village called Dakliem in Laos. Before they started the project with HPA they were one of the poorest families in their village. Their life was tough and their 2 daughters were malnourished (what does malnourished mean? - key word 1) Noum volunteered to be part of a duck farming project with HPA- he was given a couple of ducks and learnt how to look after his ducks, vaccinate ducks (what does vaccinate mean?- key word 2), how to spot when they are ill and what to best feed them. Noum is now a health hero in his village- he is now able to farm ducks, provide eggs and protein for his family. His children are no longer malnourished, they have a good, nutritious diet and are healthy (what does nutritious mean?- key word 3)

Explain that Noum and his family are a normal family who have become heroes in their community. Ask the teachers, if they had the chance to turn into a hero for the day, how would they improve the lives of children who don’t have access to rights such as shelter, nutritious food or healthcare? (Tap into rights/key vocab used in the assembly). Ask 3 teachers to give their example (put a mask on and hold up a banner with the following): If I was a health hero, I would make sure that all families had farming tools to grow nutritional food #righttofood If I was a health hero, I would make sure all children had somewhere safe to sleep #righttoshelter If I was a health hero, I would make sure all villages had trained nurses and doctors to look after people when they were sick #righttohealthcare

Explain that the students will be learning about real life health heroes and creating their own health hero and mask. In class they will get the chance to discuss different types of super powers health heroes have. Then as a year group they will vote for a ‘special year group super power’. On Health Heroes Day they will be asked to bring in £1 to wear their health hero mask at school. There will be a special health hero assembly where a representative of each year group will describe the superpower/hero their year group chose to have and why.
