Horror Film Single Camera/Scriptwriting Project Research findings James Short – 2092234 – BTEC LEVEL 3 TV & FILM

Introduction For my research part of the Horror Film Single Camera/Scriptwriting Module, I decided to partake in research on horror films and Channel 4. For my primary research I did a questionnaire on Horror films and Channel 4, whilst my secondary research is about Channel 4 and what Horror TV shows there are nowadays.

Primary Research Questionnaire

Question 1: Age of Demographic For the first question, I wanted to see what my demographic was going into my project. So I asked the people who did my questionnaire what their age was. The results state that in the 47 people who did this, most of the people are Over 21 years old, so I would have to think about what I can get away with. Pic. People Watching a movie in a cinema.

Question 2: How do you watch films? This is one is a no-brainer as I have to know how people watch films, especially Horror Films. This could help me because the brief says about my movie becoming part of a make believe Channel 4 show. Out of the 47 people that answered the questionnaire, the majority said that they watch movies both in cinema and on TV, so this is good as I can show this on Psych:Out. (That’s the name of the make believe Channel 4 show.) Pic. People getting scared in a cinema.

Question 3: Favourite type of Horror Film? This is because I want to know what kinds of horror film people like, as this can help when I come to make another horror film. Out of the 47 people that answered the questionnaire, the majority said they prefer Psychological Thrillers, it might be because of how the villain can play mind games on the lead and the audience as well. Film like ‘Silence of the Lambs’ Pic. Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins In a scene together in ‘Silence of the Lambs’ (1991).

Question 4: Most favourite thing in Horror Film? This question is for because It would be interesting what is the best thing about most horror films and what people like about them. Out of the 47 people, the majority said that they liked both the Jumpscares and the Characters in horror films, so if I am going to make the best film, then I will have to consider those choices. Pic. Climax scene from Halloween (1977).

Question 5: Least Favourite Thing in Horror Films? This is like the last question, but a lot more different as this question asks about the most despised thing in Horror films from the times. Out of the 47 people, the majority said that they hated is that there is too much violence in Horror films, so I will need to tone down the violence in my movie. Pic. A gore scene from ‘SAW 6’ (2009)

Question 6: Do you watch channel 4? The next two questions are about how people watch Channel 4, as the brief says that I will be making a short film to go onto a make believe horror show that goes onto Channel 4. Out of the 47 people, the majority of people do watch Channel 4, so when my short film goes live on that show, then most people would possibly watch it. Pic. The official Channel 4 Logo.

Question 7: What shows do you watch on Channel 4? This question is all about what shows people watch on Channel 4, as this can help with making the horror film. I am doing shows that are on Channel 4. the shows I have found are The 100, Deutschland 83 and Hollyoaks as they are the most popular shows in my own opinion, Out of the 47 people, the majority chose different shows they watch on Channel 4 like Made in Chelsea or Googlebox etc. so the popularity isn’t much as shown in the dramas. Pic. Some of the most popular shows on Channel 4.

Question 8: What horror film should I do next? I decided to use this question because it might be useful as this can help me what horror film audiences might be comfortable watching. Out of the 47 people, the majority said that they may be comfortable with watching a Psychological Thriller because there not as much violence in it. There is a trend between this and the favourite horror film people said as they’re both Psychological Thriller. Pic. Jack Nicholson in the famous scene of ‘The Shining’ (1980).

Question 9: What should be the title of my western zombie film? This question is all about the title because I haven't sought out a name for my script. The ones I have chosen are ‘The Barn of the Dead’, ‘The Stranded’, ‘Stronghold’ and ‘Dead Man Barn’ and I asked the people who did the questionnaire to answer the one that they like and I will make it the title. Out of the 47 people, The majority said that the film should be named… THE STRANDED! Pic. The cast of ‘The Walking Dead’ (2010-present).

Channel 4 and Horror TV Shows Secondary research Channel 4 and Horror TV Shows

Brief History of Channel 4 Channel 4 was launched in November 1982. It is known as a British public- service broadcaster and it is largely self-funded. It was part of the International Broadcasting Authority (IBA) before being owned by it’s father company, Channel Four Television Corporation. The channel was made to provide a fourth channel alongside the two BBC channels under the BBC Television License and ITV, a commercial broadcaster. It also has a Welsh counterpart called S4C, which broadcasts across Wales. It has many sister channels like Film4, E4, 4 Music, More 4 etc.

Demographics of Channel 4 The demographic for Channel is mixed between different channels. For example, the demographic, for one of it’s sister channels E4, is women under the age of 18 with no children. For the whole of Channel 4, the company has a database with 10 million registered people, and out of all those people, half of all 16-24 year olds in the UK watch Channel 4.

Horror TV Shows and their popularity The Horror TV show is more different than a horror film because a TV show can have one singular storyline, or ‘Arc’, spanning across continuous episodes meaning people would want to watch it to see what happens next. Some of the most famous shows include The Walking Dead, Supernatural, American Horror Story, The X Files and The Twilight Zone. I did a one question survey and asked people about what horror film do they either watch, enjoy or know about. Out of all the people who did my survey, the most popular TV show is The Walking Dead.
