Geography Project Tunapuna

Where is Tunapuna ? Tunapuna is a town situated in the east-west corridor of Trinidad. Tunapuna is actually based in the northern part of the country. The pink area on the map on the left is the location of the region of Tunapuna

Population Size of Tunapuna ? Tunapuna is 527km² in size. The population of Tunapuna consists of just over 200,000 people, which is almost 15% of Trinidad and Tobago's population Tunapuna is the most populated area/region in Trinidad Population Size of Tunapuna ?

Features to support Tourist Industry A feature of this area, Tunapuna that can be used to support a tourist industry is Carnival. Carnival being a very profitable aspect to Trinidad and also emphasizing the cultural background of Trinidadians. Tunapuna has been a venue for carnival activities. Each year this regional carnival, which is a showcase for traditional and conventional mas, steel band, and stick fighting. Tunapuna is also a location for J’ouvert. All those criteria’s are showing the cultural point of Trinidad making it a Tourist feature in the industry. In Tunapuna, there are some what places of interest and a form of tourist attraction. Tourism for one is an industry where someone can move/travel within a country or to another country, to have an experience. This experience can be of mainly leisure/relaxation. the place of choice, providing an attractive an welcoming scenery for people with natural resources allowing the place/country to gain a form of income

Features to support Tourist Industry In Tunapuna there is the University of the west indies (UWI) . UWI attracts tourists who travel to Trinidad /Tunapuna area for educational tourism UWI one of the biggest universities in the Caribbean will attract mostly people and students of mostly the other Caribbean islands to come here for a Tertiary education. Foreign students will come to this area and live on campus and while here they will witness the culture of Trinidad and our culture will be spread to families and friends of the students, bringing them to Trinidad as Tourist bringing in foreign revenue.

Benefits Challenges Due to the large numbers of students attending the university ,and also because of the university sitting along the highway ,there is a great build up of cars which cause traffic in the area as we take into consideration the probability of the apartments being fully occupied , many students visiting the area may not have a place to live , thus there may be a loss of foreign persons living in the area , the apartments bring in less foreign revenue and students may have too relocate to other places to live and hence the money is spent elsewhere Firstly around the area at the university of the west indies, there are alot of shops / stands that sell consumables , example doubles stands , this is also a cultural food and many people come to Trinidad for our food .along with the money earned from the apartments that are set up around the campus , there is a great amount of foreign revenue being received all due to the university

Features to support Tourist Industry In Tunapuna, the Facility – Centre of Excellence is located. The Centre of Excellence consists of Auditoriums, Professional Swimming pool, Guest House and also the Marvin Lee Stadium. The Auditoriums are used for large expo’s and any other activity which brings in a large crowd. Within Centre Of Excellence are many aspects that supports the tourist industry. Mainly is the Football Stadium which is used as a form of -Sporting Tourism. Football is one of the most popular sports around the world. There are many people that travel the world just to witness football due to the fact that they love the sport. Most of them being fans travelling to support their teams. The Marvin Lee Stadium one of Trinidad’s most professional football fields, is a point/feature that supports tourism in Trinidad. In this Stadium many matches are played here. CONCACAF and other fifa tournaments like recently the Fifa Women’s under 17. With International Team coming here to play, also brings people/tourist to this island to witness the sport of football. Mainly bringing in an income and foreign revenue.
