Presentation transcript:

Use this PowerPoint to help you deliver a Sport Relief assembly or tutor time session. It will help your students understand why they are fundraising and inspire them to raise money for Sport Relief 2016, which is on Friday 18th March. This presentation has been designed to last around 15 minutes. There are prompt questions that you can use if you would like to extend the presentation or make it interactive.

Thirteen-year-old Russell lives in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. Like an estimated 1.1 million homeless children in Bangladesh, Russell works all day and sleeps on the streets. Show the students the short film about Russell. You should be able to stream the video from this presentation by clicking on the play button. Please ensure that external content is enabled. If you experience any problems with this you can download the video (or stream it) at sportrelief.com/Russell What do you think would be the hardest thing about Russell’s life? What emotions do you think Russell feels when he is working and sleeping on the streets? How is money raised by Sport Relief making a difference to Russell on a day-to-day basis? How might it make a difference to his future?

Use this and the following slide to help students understand the difference every penny raised can make. How much of a difference will our school [tutor group] make if we raise £100? £500? Even £1000? How would you choose different amounts to be spent? How many young people would we be able to help?

Don’t forget – half of Sport Relief money is used to help people in the UK. People like Josh. Potentially people like you, your family and friends. Josh from Leeds has a rare neurological illness that came on suddenly one day at school. “By lunchtime, at school, my arms had stopped moving. By the time I got to A&E, I couldn’t move. I could’ve died.” After four months in hospital, he returned home in a wheelchair. Like many young disabled people he felt isolated and lonely. But now, thanks to Sport Relief funded project Spider-Y, he has the chance to take part in sport, socialise and raise awareness of how isolated disabled young people can feel. Did you know that Sport Relief cash is used to fund projects in the UK, as well as in the world’s poorest communities? Do you think this is a good thing?

If you already have plans for a Sport Relief Mile, 24-hour challenge or Try-athlete sessions, share them with the students now. People all over the country will be getting active to raise money for Sport Relief. We could: Organise a sponsored Sport Relief Mile. Get the whole school to run one, three or even six miles round the playground, field or gym! Do a sponsored 24-hour challenge. How about cycling the length of the UK on exercise bikes? Playing a football match with lots of extra time? Swimming the width of the Channel (in the safety of a pool!)? Pay to become Try-athletes. How about getting sponsorship to learn a new sport? Could older students offer a lesson for a fee?

If you already have plans for fundraising activities, share them with the students now. How else could we raise money for Sport Relief? Can anyone remember fundraising events we’ve organised in the past? (e.g. baking, dressing up, sponsored challenges) Can you think of any new ideas for this year?

So don’t forget – Sport Relief will take place on Friday 18th March So don’t forget – Sport Relief will take place on Friday 18th March. Let’s all do our best to raise as much money as we can!
