Humans are made of billons of cells. Bacteria are only made of one Humans are made of billons of cells. Bacteria are only made of one. Despite differences in what we look like, bacteria and humans are both living things and perform life functions in similar ways.
Humans are complex and have organ systems (such as the digestive and respiratory systems) that help us carry out life functions. Bacteria are only made of one cell and, therefore, have no organs, but they are still able to perform life functions. But how?
Inside of bacteria are organelles Inside of bacteria are organelles. Organelles perform jobs for cells the same way that organs perform jobs for humans. On the next slide, you will see some comparisons between organs in humans and organelles inside cells.

The mitochondria is an organelle that performs a job similar to lungs in humans. The mitochondria performs the process of cellular respiration. Structure X in the diagram below is a representation of a mitochondria.

Cellular respiration is important for cells because it is how cells make energy (ATP) which fuels all of the other processes inside cells. Without cellular respiration there would be no ATP and without ATP the cell wouldn’t be able to do things like active transport. It also wouldn’t be able to reproduce and divide. Without cellular respiration, cells would die because of a lack of ATP.
