A Closer Look at Our Producers… The Plants

Where is chlorophyll found? Why are plants green? Chlorophyll Where is chlorophyll found?

Zoom In…Closer…Closer!

Leaf Structure Palisade layer Stoma Guard cells Most photosynthesis occurs in the palisade layer in structures called...CHLOROPLASTS Gas exchange of CO2 and O2 occurs at openings called stomata surrounded by guard cells on the lower leaf surface.

Closer…into the Plant Cell CHLOROPLASTS

Chloroplast Structure Thickened regions called thylakoids. A stack of thylakoids is called a granum. (Plural – grana) Stroma is a liquid surrounding the thylakoids. The chlorophyll is in the thylakoids.

Chlorophylls ABSORB blue/violet and orange/red light, but they REFLECT green light, making chlorophylls and plants appear green

So…Why is Chlorophyll Important? The chlorophyll absorbs the sunlight for PHOTOSYNTHESIS.

Summarize What we know about Photosynthesis Occurs in the leaves of plants in the chlorophyll of organelles called chloroplasts. Requires sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide, releases oxygen. Process by which plants and other autotrophs use energy from sunlight to make food (sugar known as GLUCOSE). Overall equation: 6 CO2 + 6 H20  C6H12O6 + 6 O2

Glucose is the food for the plant. It gives the plant energy to grow. Why do plants need glucose? Glucose is the food for the plant. It gives the plant energy to grow.

Why do animals need glucose? The Oxygen Cycle video Cellular Respiration video We break down the glucose and store the energy in ATP to use whenever we need energy! This process is called Cellular Respiration.

Basic Cellular Respiration CO2 C6H12O6 H2O + ATP (Energy) Reactants Products

EVERYWHERE! In all of the cells of our body! So Where Does Cellular Respiration Take Place? EVERYWHERE! In all of the cells of our body! But specifically in the parts of the cell known as the MITOCHONDRIA

Mitochondrion Structure

Summarize What we know about Respiration Occurs in the mitochondria of all body cells Requires oxygen and glucose, releases carbon dioxide and water. Process by which all organisms (animals AND plants) breakdown glucose from food for energy (stored in ATP). Overall equation: C6H12O6 + 6 O2  6 CO2 + 6 H20 + ATP

How are Waste Products Recycled? During the process of photosynthesis, oxygen is produced. We use this oxygen to breathe for cellular respiration. During the process of respiration, carbon dioxide is produced. Plants use this carbon dioxide to make glucose during photosynthesis.

Anaerobic Respiration Without oxygen 1. Alcoholic fermentation-Plants Yeast produces alcohol and 2 ATP 2. Lactic Acid fermentation- Animals Muscles produce lactic acid Sprinters Produces burn, pain I wait a day on this slide.
